What began as an animal-cruelty investigation in San Elizario ended with 100 livestock removed from two properties, including animals authorities say were malnourished, untreated and living in filthy conditions. A 61-year-old man now faces four counts of cruelty to livestock animals, while the fate of some rescued animals remains unresolved.
According to KVIA, deputies assisted the county’s Animal Welfare Unit after investigators found livestock without proper food or water and showing signs of untreated medical problems. The homeowner surrendered several animals that needed immediate veterinary care, and detectives also found neglected animals at a neighboring property.
Search Warrants Uncovered Widespread Neglect
The El Paso County Animal Welfare Department investigates cruelty and neglect complaints involving pets, wildlife and livestock, with law enforcement assisting on priority cases. In this investigation, authorities obtained search warrants for both properties and transported the rescued animals to Gracey’s Rescue Ranch for care, KVIA reported.
Investigators documented malnourishment, inadequate food and water, untreated medical conditions and unsanitary living conditions, according to the sheriff’s office. After a civil hearing, a court awarded 69 of the animals to Gracey’s Rescue Ranch for treatment and rehabilitation, while the disposition of the remaining animals is still pending.
Four Warrants Issued As Investigation Continues
Detectives obtained four arrest warrants for Santos Gordillo Torres last Thursday, carrying a combined $60,000 bond, and authorities arrested him Friday, according to KVIA. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains active and “anticipates additional criminal charges,” though Torres is accused and has not been convicted.
The case comes shortly after Hoodline reported a separate San Elizario animal-cruelty case involving a severely emaciated dog. The incidents are unrelated, but both involved county animal-welfare officers and sheriff’s deputies responding to allegations that animals were left without adequate care.
