Four people were hospitalized Saturday morning after six vehicles collided on Route 6 in Sandwich, triggering a major emergency response along the busy Cape Cod highway. Eighteen people needed assistance at the scene, and one person had to be removed from a vehicle by rescuers.
The crash happened just before 9 a.m. at mile marker 62, between old exits 3 and 4 on the eastbound side, according to WCVB News. The Sandwich Fire Department said the vehicles included two vans and two SUVs, with two additional vehicles also involved.
Four people were transported to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment. Two Sandwich ambulances responded, along with ambulances from West Barnstable and Bourne, as crews worked through the unusually large number of patients and vehicles.
Cause Of Sandwich Crash Remains Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the collision, and additional details about the hospitalized victims were not immediately released. The response also involved three additional calls for service handled by Mashpee and additional Sandwich units, according to the WCVB report.
The crash comes just weeks after a separate deadly motorcycle collision on Route 6 in Sandwich. One rider died and another was injured in that July crash, as detailed by an earlier Route 6 report.
