A 37-year-old man is missing in North Georgia, and search crews are combing Carters Lake after authorities said he was last known to have sheltered beneath a dock. The search is unfolding by air and water across a two-square-mile area, turning a quiet summer recreation spot into an active emergency scene.
Sean Cunningham is the missing man, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, which reported that authorities were searching around the lake Friday. The initial report did not provide additional details about Cunningham’s clothing, vehicle or how long he had been missing.
Carters Lake’s Size Adds To The Search Challenge
Carters Lake covers about 3,200 surface acres and has roughly 62 miles of shoreline, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The agency also describes the lake as having a rugged shoreline, with an average depth of about 200 feet and some areas deeper than 450 feet.
Those conditions help explain why crews are using both aircraft and boats while focusing on the two-square-mile search zone. The search for Cunningham remained active Friday night, with authorities working to determine his whereabouts and bring the operation to a close.
