A person was shot at 564 Blue Hill Avenue in Dorchester on Wednesday morning, steps from the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Seaver Street and just outside the Franklin Park Zoo. The shooting happened around 10:14 a.m. and left the victim with life-threatening wounds before they were rushed to a local hospital. By late morning, Boston police were still searching for the suspected shooter.
Boston police reported that a person was shot Wednesday morning in Dorchester, according to The Boston Globe. Homicide detectives were summoned to the scene, per Boston police, and as of 10:54 a.m. the search for the suspected shooter remained ongoing, per police transmissions cited by the paper.
Address Already Flagged in Prior Police Alert
The address itself wasn't unfamiliar to investigators. In May 2026, Boston Police Department District B-3 detectives issued a community alert seeking two suspects in an armed robbery investigation who were believed to frequent the building complex at 564 Blue Hill Avenue, according to a Boston Police Department community alert.
The scene also sits at the edge of Franklin Park, where police arrested a 15-year-old suspect on July 25, just under two weeks before Wednesday's shooting, for firing multiple gunshots near the Franklin Park Zoo's giraffe entrance during the Puerto Rican Festival, according to Universal Hub. That incident, too, unfolded steps from the Blue Hill Avenue and Seaver Street intersection.
A Violent Summer Along the Avenue
Wednesday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence along the corridor this summer. On July 15, a suspect opened fire near Normandy Street and Blue Hill Avenue, striking an active police cruiser before officers arrested him without returning fire, Hoodline reported in its coverage of the gunfire that struck a cruiser. Ten days earlier, on July 5, a fatal shooting at 500 Blue Hill Avenue killed 24-year-old Travis Washington and injured three others; police arrested a 24-year-old suspect on murder charges on July 21, as detailed in Hoodline's report on the earlier fatal Blue Hill Ave shooting.
In May, two people were hospitalized after a shooting outside a Latin American restaurant at 122 Seaver Street, less than two blocks from Blue Hill Avenue, according to WCVB Channel 5 Boston. That shooting occurred around 11 a.m., in front of shoppers on the block.
A Conviction Tied to Another Blue Hill Ave Shooting
That same month, a Suffolk County jury convicted a Dorchester man on multiple firearm charges stemming from a 2023 shootout on Talbot Avenue that wounded eight people during the pre-dawn J'ouvert Caribbean festival parade, Hoodline reported in its coverage of the 2023 J'ouvert shooting conviction. Investigators had recovered 20 shell casings from multiple shooters at that scene, according to the same report.
Citywide Shootings Are Down, but Not Everywhere
The recurring violence along Blue Hill Avenue stands in contrast to broader citywide trends. Boston recorded 28 total shooting victims between January 1 and May 10, 2026, a 22% decrease from the 36 victims tallied over the same period in 2025 and 32% below the five-year average, according to Boston Police Department statistics. Yet roughly 80% of all Boston shootings between 2018 and 2023 were concentrated in just four neighborhoods, Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, and Jamaica Plain, according to the Vera Institute of Justice.
Staffing Shortfalls Meet a $162 Million Streetscape Plan
Boston police have also been operating below full strength, fielding around 2,100 officers against an authorized baseline of 2,800, about 75% of capacity, according to public safety data from Omnilert. Meanwhile, the City of Boston and the MBTA announced updated plans this month for a $162 million reconstruction of 3.1 miles of Blue Hill Avenue, adding upgraded street lighting, 24 new pedestrian crossings, and dedicated center-running bus lanes along a stretch where, on average, an emergency-response vehicle crashes every three days, according to a project briefing covering the corridor from Grove Hall to Mattapan Square.
