A man was rushed to a trauma center yesterday after being shot in the parking lot of the TJ Maxx at Alameda's South Shore Shopping Center, according to authorities. Alameda Fire Department first responders found the victim around 1:20 PM in the retail store's parking lot, and paramedics transported him for treatment. Police have not released his name, his age, or how badly he was hurt.
The shooting occurred outside the TJ Maxx in the sprawling South Shore Center along Park Street and Otis Drive, as reported by KTVU. Investigators have not said how the shooting unfolded, what led up to it, or whether anyone has been taken into custody. The Alameda Police Department, which provided the information used in the station's report, has likewise not said whether a suspect has been identified.
South Shore Center is a major commercial hub for the city, a 594,000-square-foot open-air shopping complex spread across 47 acres that also houses Safeway, Kohl's, Petco, and other national retailers, according to Weisbach Architecture Design. The center sits directly adjacent to Crown Memorial State Beach, a proximity that has repeatedly put the shopping complex in the middle of local violence.
A Familiar Flashpoint Near Crown Beach
This is not the first time gunfire has erupted at or near South Shore Center. In June, a shooting that began as an unpermitted beach takeover gathering at Crown Memorial State Beach spilled over into the shopping center, wounding two people and eventually leading to the July arrest of a 19-year-old suspect on attempted murder charges, a case Hoodline covered at the time. Alameda police had braced for exactly that kind of disruption months earlier, according to earlier Hoodline reporting on beach takeover concerns.
The shopping center's parking areas have drawn police attention before that, too. In October 2023, Alameda police investigated an armed robbery at the South Shore Center Safeway in which a gunman confronted and threatened a customer entering the store in broad daylight, according to the Alameda Police Department. It is not clear from available information whether that incident is connected in any way to the June shooting or Saturday's.
Police Resources And A Statewide Downward Trend
The renewed gunfire comes as the Alameda Police Department has been investing in new tools aimed at commercial corridors. During 2025, the department fielded 43,849 calls for service, launched a dedicated Business District Officer Program, and increased traffic enforcement stops by 91% over 2024 levels, according to a newsletter from Supervisor Lena Tam's office. In May, federal budget legislation allocated $772,700 in Department of Justice technology grants to the department to establish and operate a Real Time Crime Center, per a U.S. House document. It remains an open question whether either program will be deployed to increase patrols around South Shore Center following Saturday's shooting.
The department has also offered a $75,000 hiring bonus for new police recruits, a response to law enforcement staffing shortages tracked by the Public Policy Institute of California. Statewide, violent crime actually fell 5.3% in 2024 to 481 incidents per 100,000 residents, with homicides down 13.5% and robberies down 7.5%, though aggravated assaults remained 22% above pre-pandemic levels, per the same institute. Neighboring Oakland saw an even sharper decline, with a 33.8% drop in reported violent offenses in the first quarter of 2025 compared with the same period the year before, according to the Committee on Revision of the Penal Code.
Those statewide and regional declines offer little comfort to Alameda residents rattled by a string of high-profile violence in their own city. In July 2024, a gunman shot and killed four family members and critically injured an infant at an Alameda residence, a case the Alameda Post has continued to track and one for which the accused has since been ordered to stand trial. The Alameda County Public Health Department launched a ten-year dashboard tracking firearm deaths from 2015 through 2024 to help guide community violence intervention efforts across the county.
For now, the circumstances of Saturday's shooting outside the TJ Maxx remain largely unknown. Authorities have not disclosed a motive, have not confirmed whether the victim was targeted or caught in a random encounter, and have not said whether security footage from the shopping center captured the incident.
