According to an alert posted by the Denver Police Dept., one victim was located at the scene and transported to a hospital following the shooting. The department said officers are working to develop suspect information and cautioned that details in the alert are subject to change based on investigative findings, with updates to be posted to the thread when available. No suspect description or arrest has been announced.
The block sits in Denver's East Colfax neighborhood, a residential and commercial corridor roughly five miles east of downtown near East Colfax Avenue and Lowry, according to USAJ Realty. The area is patrolled by Denver Police District Two, headquartered at 3921 N. Holly Street and responsible for public safety operations across northeast Denver, per the City and County of Denver. In April, the department shifted patrol boundaries between District Two and District Six, adding personnel to District Two to better cover urban neighborhoods near downtown, a move Police Chief Ron Thomas attributed to population shifts and structural patrol needs, according to Public Technologies.
A Rise in Homicides Even as Other Crime Falls
The shooting comes amid a troubling trend in Denver's homicide numbers this year. As of mid-July, the city had recorded 30 homicides in 2026, a 37 percent increase over the 22 recorded during the same stretch of 2025, even as non-fatal shootings, violent crime, and property crime all declined citywide, according to 9News. Chief Thomas has noted that homicide is the only major crime category trending upward in the city this year.
Statewide, the picture looks different. Colorado's reported violent crime dropped 10.7 percent in 2025 compared to the prior year, including a 16.8 percent decline in homicides and a 9.0 percent drop in aggravated assaults, per data compiled by the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice. That divergence between Denver's homicide spike and the statewide downward trend has drawn attention from city officials looking for a response.
City Deploys New Violence Suppression Plan
In late July, the Denver Police Department announced a citywide Violence Suppression Action Plan aimed at addressing the rise in killings. The plan deploys dedicated Violence Response Teams and expands Place Network Investigations meant to disrupt violent crime networks, and it includes targeted enforcement against illegal firearms along with regulatory licensing enforcement, the department said in its announcement.
It is not yet known whether Friday's shooting will factor into that broader enforcement push, since the victim's condition, the shooter's identity, and any motive remain unconfirmed pending further updates from District Two or the Major Crimes unit. The block has seen serious gun violence before: in August 2022, police investigated a fatal shooting one block away near East 16th Avenue and North Willow Street, in which an adult male victim died from a gunshot wound, handled at the time by DPD's Major Crimes Homicide Unit.
