Las Vegas is heading into another dangerously hot day, with clear skies and temperatures expected to climb from the low 80s before sunrise to 113 degrees by Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service has an Extreme Heat Warning in effect, and the city is not expected to get much relief after sunset, with overnight temperatures hovering near 88 degrees.
Heat Peaks Wednesday Afternoon
Wednesday will be sunny, with south-southeast winds between 6 and 12 mph and gusts reaching up to 21 mph. Temperatures are forecast to reach their highest point late in the afternoon, when the heat index could rise as high as 107 degrees.
The dangerous heat is expected to continue through Saturday, with highs near 112 degrees Thursday, 113 degrees Friday and 114 degrees Saturday. Overnight lows will remain unusually warm, ranging from about 89 to 90 degrees, making it difficult for homes, vehicles and the human body to cool down.
Storm Chances Arrive Next Week
Rain is unlikely through the weekend, but monsoon moisture is expected to gradually return. Las Vegas could see a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday evening and again Tuesday, while afternoon temperatures ease only slightly to around 109 and 107 degrees.
Officials Urge Residents To Take Precautions
The warning covers parts of southern Nevada and remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday. Weather officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air conditioning, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and checking on relatives and neighbors.
Children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles, where temperatures can become lethal within minutes. Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be moved to a cool place immediately, with heat stroke treated as a medical emergency.
