A 33-year-old man was stabbed twice in the torso just before midnight on Saturday after he tried to break up a fight at a gathering on San Antonio's South Side, according to San Antonio police. He was taken to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition following the attack in the 6100 block of Padre Drive near VFW Boulevard.
The confrontation began, according to police, after a man was talking to another man's girlfriend during the event, which sparked a verbal altercation. As reported by WOAI, that man was asked to leave after the argument, but he instead began physically fighting with multiple people at the gathering. The 33-year-old victim then attempted to break up the physical fight, police said, and was stabbed twice for his effort.
Police say the man responsible, a 28-year-old, was arrested after allegedly stabbing the victim and was detained at the scene. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police. Under Texas Penal Code Section 22.02, that charge is classified as a second-degree felony, carrying a statutory penalty of two to 20 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to Flatiron Legal Advisors. Texas Penal Code Section 1.07(a)(17) defines a deadly weapon as any firearm or object that, in the manner of its use or intended use, is capable of causing death or serious bodily injury, and Texas courts frequently classify knives or bladed tools as deadly weapons during physical altercations, per the same source.
A South Side Corridor With Deep Roots
The stabbing unfolded near some of the South Side's most recognizable landmarks. The 6100 block of Padre Drive sits close to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9186, which dedicated its bronze “The Price of Freedom” memorial statue at the corner of Padre Drive and VFW Boulevard last year, according to VFW Magazine. Nearby Mission County Park, at 6030 Padre Drive, is a prominent Bexar County public space along the San Antonio River Walk Mission Reach corridor that frequently hosts large community gatherings, as noted by the San Antonio Current.
The area has seen knife violence before. In July 2016, a man playing a mobile game was stabbed in the neck and shoulder during a late-night robbery in a parking lot on Padre Drive, an attack that led to the arrest of two suspects with the help of K-9 and helicopter units, according to KSAT.
Part of a Wider Pattern This Month
Saturday's stabbing adds to a string of multi-wound knife attacks reported across San Antonio in August, including an August 27 incident on Lamar Street and an August 20 attack on Fredericksburg Road, both previously covered by Hoodline. Police in several of those cases detained suspects or collected blood-trail evidence at the scene.
Citywide, though, the broader trend has been moving in the opposite direction. Violent street crime in San Antonio, which includes aggravated assault, robbery, deadly conduct, and murder, dropped 21.1% in 2025 compared to 2024, according to the San Antonio Report, a decline that followed the third year of the city's Violent Crime Reduction Plan. Monthly aggravated assault incidents specifically fell 19.8% in 2025 compared to 2024, per a joint report from UT San Antonio researchers and city officials cited by UTSA Today.
Still, more recent numbers show that progress has leveled off. San Antonio Police Department data logged 15,884 total crimes against persons between January and June of this year, a slight increase from the 15,709 reported during the same period in 2025. The formal case against the 28-year-old suspect remains pending, and the full details of what led to the fight beyond the initial verbal dispute have not been made public.
