Sporting KC Brings Home Josh Wolff's Son in Record $4.5M Trade With Austin FC

Sporting Kansas City has acquired midfielder Owen Wolff from Austin FC in a cash trade that sends the 21-year-old back to the city where he grew up and where his father once starred for the club. The deal includes a $4.5 million guaranteed cash payment to Austin FC that can climb to $7.6 million with performance-based add-ons, and Wolff has signed with Sporting KC through June 2031.

Sporting KC announced the acquisition Wednesday, according to KCTV5. The $4.5 million guaranteed figure represents the largest cash trade for a U22 Initiative player in MLS history, according to KC Soccer Journal, with the U22 designation allowing Wolff's salary to count against Sporting KC's budget at a reduced rate. As part of the transaction, Austin FC retained a sell-on percentage on any future transfer of Wolff, and he joins Sporting KC as a domestic player who does not occupy an international roster spot, per MLSSoccer.com.

A Homecoming Rooted in Family Legacy

Wolff grew up in Kansas City and played for Sporting Blue Valley as his first youth club before later developing in the academies of the Columbus Crew and Atlanta United, per KCTV5. He is the son of Sporting Hall-of-Famer Josh Wolff, who spent parts of two stints with the Kansas City Wizards, from 2003 to 2006 and again from 2008 to 2010. Josh Wolff compiled 46 goals and 30 assists across 163 competitive matches for the club, ranking sixth in franchise history for goals before his 2019 induction as the 10th Sporting Legend, according to the same report referencing FOX Sports.

The father-son connection carries its own piece of league history. When Owen Wolff scored his first professional MLS goal against Real Salt Lake in March 2023, he and Josh Wolff became the eighth father-son duo to each score a goal in MLS history, the outlet's report notes.

Sporting KC's Pitch and Wolff's Rise in Austin

Sporting KC general manager David Lee said Wolff is one of the top young players in MLS and that his versatility to play multiple positions will make him a key asset for the coaching staff, according to KCTV5. Lee added that Wolff can add goals and assists to Sporting KC and said the club is extremely excited to welcome him to Kansas City.

Wolff made history in Austin by becoming the club's first-ever Homegrown player signing in September 2021 at age 16, later making his professional debut that November against Sporting KC, per MLSSoccer.com. Over six professional seasons with Austin FC, he tallied 10 goals and 23 assists across 147 appearances, headlined by a breakout 2025 campaign in which he recorded 7 goals and 12 assists across all competitions and ranked fourth on MLS's annual 22 Under 22 list. Wolff also represented the United States at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina, helping lead the American squad to the quarterfinal round, the outlet's report adds.

Part of a Bigger Spending Push

The trade for Wolff comes amid an aggressive midseason roster overhaul by Sporting KC, following the club's franchise-record $18 million acquisition of Brazilian forward André Luiz from Olympiacos FC on August 18, according to RealGM. Sporting KC entered late August near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, and the moves signal a push to reshape the roster quickly.

Both sides completed the deal ahead of the 2026 MLS secondary transfer window closure on September 2, which was extended into September for the first time in two decades to align with major European league transfer deadlines, per VOI. For Austin FC, trading Wolff follows the departure of former head coach Josh Wolff in late 2024 and the earlier trade of midfielder Dani Pereira to CF Montreal, forming part of a broader rebuild under new sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad and incoming head coach Jim Curtin, RealGM reports.

Sporting KC has said it seeks to be a destination for top domestic talent around MLS, and Wolff's arrival fits that stated goal as the club looks to climb the Western Conference table with a player who has both an international pedigree and a hometown tie to one of its most celebrated former players.
