A St. Joseph police officer returned fire Saturday night after a suspicious person shot at him near the Heritage Sports Complex, and the shooter remains at large. The officer was not hurt, but the exchange of gunfire triggered a sprawling, multi-agency manhunt through the riverfront area that lasted hours and briefly locked down a nearby casino.
Officer Approached a Suspicious Person, Then Shots Rang Out
According to Northwest MO Info, the officer was patrolling the area when he approached a suspicious person, who fired at least one round at him. The officer returned fire, but the suspect fled into a wooded area before officers could apprehend him. St. Joseph Police reported that the shooting happened at approximately 8:50 p.m. Saturday in the 2000 block of Water Works Road, near the Heritage Sports Complex, according to the St. Joseph Post. Water Works Road is near the athletic fields and riverfront facilities in that part of town.
The St. Joseph Police Department confirmed in a news release that the officer was not injured, and investigators said Sunday they had found no evidence that the suspect was struck or injured when the officer returned fire, per the same account. The area sits near the Bill McKinney Softball Complex, a five-field municipal facility along the Missouri River that hosted the 2010 NCAA Division II Softball Championship and was named the 2009 ASA Complex of the Year, according to the St. Joseph Sports Commission's information on the venue.
Helicopter, Canine Units Joined the Search
The scale of the response reflected how seriously investigators treated the threat to the officer. The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department deployed a helicopter for about an hour to conduct aerial surveillance, while the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent canine units to assist officers on the ground, the St. Joseph Post reported. St. Joseph Police are also working with the Kansas City Police Department in the broader investigation, per Northwest MO Info.
That kind of cross-agency cooperation isn't unusual for the region. St. Joseph Police Chief Paul Luster, who has led the department since June 2023, spent more than 25 years with the Kansas City Police Department beforehand, including a stint as a Major, according to the City of St. Joseph's announcement of his appointment — a background that mirrors the operational ties between the two departments reflected in KCPD's rapid helicopter deployment.
Casino Patrons Briefly Locked Out During the Sweep
As the search intensified late Saturday night, police established a heavy perimeter near the St. Jo Frontier Casino, allowing patrons to leave the building but temporarily barring them from re-entering while officers swept the surrounding grounds, according to the St. Joseph Community Alert. The casino was among the locations affected by the police response.
The Heritage Park grounds include a parking area near a performance pavilion. That setting adds to concerns about safety at a site regularly used by families and large crowds.
Second Park Shooting in Two Weeks Raises Questions
Saturday's shooting was not the first gunfire reported at a St. Joseph park this month. A separate shooting at Bartlett Park left one juvenile female with minor injuries, according to KQ2, prompting heightened concern among residents about safety in the city's municipal parks. The KYSJ also described an unrelated armed pursuit in neighboring Clinton County that ended in a vehicle explosion and a suspect's death.
Suspect Remains at Large
As of Sunday, the identity and whereabouts of the shooter remained unknown, and police continued to seek public tips to help track the person down, per the St. Joseph Post. Once identified and apprehended, the suspect could face first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer under Missouri Revised Statutes Section 565.081, a Class A felony that applies to anyone who attempts to kill or knowingly attempts to cause serious physical injury to a peace officer with a deadly weapon. That charge carries a sentencing range of 10 to 30 years or life in prison.
