Stabbing at East 79th Sunoco Sends Man to Hospital, Suspect Vanishes

A 38-year-old man was seriously injured early Thursday after being stabbed at the Sunoco gas station on East 79th Street and Chester Avenue on Cleveland's East Side, and the suspect remains on the loose. Cleveland police officers responded to the scene around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, and Cleveland EMS transported the victim to University Hospitals for treatment.

According to Cleveland 19 News, officers searched a nearby apartment building after the attack, and reporter Dan Stamness noted that the suspect fled to the apartment complex behind the gas station. Police also searched the premises at 7100 Euclid Avenue, a search that Wikipedia identifies as the historic Baker Motor Vehicle Company Building, a 1910 commercial landmark on the National Register of Historic Places that now houses a business incubator and office complex just south of the gas station.

The stabbing lands amid a broader rise in non-fatal violent crime across Cleveland this year. Midyear 2026 data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association shows Cleveland recorded 1,291 aggravated assaults between January and June 2026, up from 1,132 during the same period last year. Reporting by Axios in August found that while Cleveland's homicide count held flat at 48 through midyear compared with 2025, aggravated assaults rose by more than 20% in the same stretch, even as violent crime declined nationally.
