New York City is waking to clear skies and temperatures in the low 70s Friday morning, but the calm will not last all weekend. Friday and Saturday look ideal for outdoor plans before a wetter, stormier pattern moves in Sunday afternoon.
Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 85 degrees and west winds around 6 to 9 mph. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible late Friday afternoon or early evening, though the rain chance is only about 10%, and no watches or warnings are in effect.
Saturday Looks Like The Outdoor Winner
Saturday should bring the weekend’s best weather, with sunny skies and a high near 82 degrees. Winds will stay relatively light from the northeast, while Saturday night turns partly cloudy with a low around 72.
Sunday Brings The Big Weather Shift
Showers and thunderstorms could arrive after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a 50% chance of precipitation and rainfall totals between a quarter-inch and half-inch possible. The National Weather Service’s New York office says moderate to heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are most likely Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, when the storm chance rises to 90%.
That setup could bring brief heavy downpours, gusty winds and isolated flooding concerns, depending on the exact storm track, according to the latest forecast discussion. Southerly winds will also strengthen, and the weather service says rip-current risk could rise to high at ocean beaches Sunday.
Monday Starts Stormy Then Dries Out
Showers and thunderstorms are likely before 8 a.m. Monday, followed by a slight chance of additional storms under mostly sunny skies. Temperatures may climb back to around 85 degrees, with quieter and mostly sunny weather returning Tuesday and Wednesday before another chance of storms arrives Thursday.
