Colorado’s birthday celebration got a frosting-and-caffeine upgrade Saturday, when 285 people gathered at 14,115 feet to dunk doughnuts into coffee at the same time. The summit snack stunt on Pikes Peak has now officially been added to the Guinness World Records lineup.
The City of Colorado Springs said the participants took part at the mountain’s summit during the state’s 150th anniversary celebration, with Guinness officials confirming the result, the Denver Gazette reported. The doughnuts came from the Summit Visitor Center, a fitting choice for an event held at one of Colorado’s most recognizable attractions. The city’s official Pikes Peak site lists the summit’s elevation at 14,115 feet and highlights the mountain’s famous doughnuts.
The record attempt began at 11 a.m. Saturday, according to Visit Colorado Springs, which advertised free, first-come participation for visitors who had arranged timed-entry or shuttle access. Getting a crowd synchronized at the top of a fourteener is no small logistical feat, even when the main equipment is coffee and a pastry.
A 250-Person Goal Turned Into 285 Dunkers
The mountain had hoped to draw 250 people for the simultaneous dunk, according to an earlier Gazette preview. Saturday’s turnout beat that target by 35 participants, giving the celebration a sweeter ending than organizers originally needed.
Sarah Braun, interim manager of Pikes Peak–America’s Mountain, said the achievement reflected the summit’s views, traditions and visitors from around the world, as reported by the Denver Gazette. For Colorado Springs, the mountain now has a new bit of bragging material: its signature doughnuts are part of an official world record.
