A 33-year-old Tavares man is dead after the pickup truck he was driving flipped onto its roof on a rural stretch of Jones Avenue in unincorporated northwest Orange County. The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday as the man traveled westbound approaching Dirt Drive, and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital after being transported from the scene.
According to WESH, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the man lost control of his 1999 Ford F-350 pickup for reasons that remain unclear, causing the truck to run off the roadway's left shoulder before it overturned and landed on its roof. Inside Lake reports that emergency crews took the driver to AdventHealth Apopka, a hospital roughly 10 miles south of the crash site in northwest Orange County, where he was pronounced deceased. FHP is investigating the crash, and no additional details about the driver's identity have been released.
A Road That Feeds Into Eco-Tourism Traffic
Jones Avenue functions as more than a quiet rural cutoff — it's the exit corridor for the 11-mile Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive, a one-way eco-tourism route managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District that funnels thousands of visitors' vehicles into Zellwood on weekends and holidays. Posted speed limits along Jones Avenue and nearby Laughlin Road range between 35 and 45 mph across the area's low-density agricultural and residential zones, per records reviewed by Orange County Government, Florida.
Thursday's crash wasn't an isolated event for this stretch of roadway. In February 2020, a Tavares driver attempting to pass another vehicle collided with an oncoming motorcycle on the same stretch of Jones Avenue, forcing the bike into a water-filled ditch and killing the rider, according to Lake Legal News. Less than two years later, in January 2022, a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Jones Avenue and U.S. 441 in Zellwood killed an Apopka motorcyclist and also involved a driver from Tavares, the same outlet's reporting on Inside Lake's coverage shows.
Countywide Crash Numbers Remain High
The fatality adds to a grim tally for one of Florida's busiest counties for traffic incidents. Orange County recorded 25,370 total motor vehicle crashes in 2025, keeping it among the five Florida counties with the highest overall crash volumes, according to Baggett Law Personal Injury Lawyers, which notes the county averages nearly 70 reported crashes every day.
Statewide, the picture is slightly less bleak. Florida traffic fatalities fell 5.4% in 2025 to 2,930 total deaths, down from 3,098 the year before, per data cited by FindTheLawyers. Even with that single-year drop, the state still logs roughly eight traffic deaths every day.
Investigation Still Open
Because the crash resulted in a death, Florida Highway Patrol protocol automatically triggers a formal Traffic Homicide Investigation, according to Leppard Law. That process involves specialized troopers conducting physical scene mapping, mechanical checks on the vehicle, and toxicology testing, meaning any official determination on what caused the driver to lose control remains pending.
Thursday's wreck follows a string of recent fatal rollovers Hoodline has covered across Orange County, including a truck flip on a notorious road earlier this month and a fatal single-vehicle crash involving a Mustang in Landstar last month. FHP has not released the identity of the Tavares man pending further investigation.
