A Jeep ran a stop sign near Woodstock Monday afternoon and slammed into a westbound Freightliner, leaving three people injured and one passenger with life-threatening injuries. The Jeep then veered off the road and struck a utility pole, according to authorities.
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office said deputies and firefighters were called around 3 p.m. to the intersection of U.S. Route 14 and South Hughes Road in unincorporated Woodstock. The Freightliner was driven by a 52-year-old Sterling man, while an 18-year-old Rockford man was driving the 2020 Jeep Wrangler.
The Jeep carried two passengers, a 16-year-old and a 21-year-old man from Texas. The older passenger was flown to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford with life-threatening injuries, while the Jeep driver and younger passenger were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, CBS Chicago reported.
A Woodstock Intersection Already Flagged For Safety Concerns
The crash happened at an intersection that has already drawn attention from transportation planners. A McHenry County transportation document said an intersection project at U.S. Route 14 and Hartland-Hughes Road was being planned because of increasing safety concerns.
The sheriff's Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the collision. Officials have not announced whether any citations or charges will follow.
