The crash happened around 12:50 a.m. near the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse, according to CBS News. Before going over the edge, the vehicle veered off the roadway, knocked over a trash container, and tore through the metal railing meant to keep pedestrians away from the bluff, according to site details reported by The Pajaronian. Investigators have not determined what caused the driver to lose control.
911 callers reported a vehicle over the cliff near Parking Lot C at Lighthouse Field State Beach, prompting a large emergency response. The Santa Cruz Fire Department sent four engines, a ladder truck, and a battalion chief, while the Santa Cruz Police Department and crews from the Central Fire and Scotts Valley fire districts also responded to the scene, per the CBS News report.
Rescue Effort in the Dark Surf
One occupant self-extricated from the wreckage and told first responders that the other victim was still trapped inside the car, which was partially submerged near the surf spot. Fire department rescue swimmers pulled the second victim from the vehicle and administered life-saving measures en route to the hospital, but that person died after arriving, per the same account. The occupant who escaped suffered only minor injuries.
Police deployed a drone to search the water for any additional people who might have gone over the edge, and fire department swimmers confirmed there were no other victims in the ocean.
