Kwame Swain, the man critically injured in a shooting at an east Las Vegas Walmart, made his first court appearance Monday after a hospital stay forced him to miss an earlier hearing. He is now out of custody while facing four charges tied to a domestic violence case connected to the chaotic confrontation.
According to FOX5 Vegas, Swain faces three misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and one felony count of attempted coercion. Police booked him in absentia while he was hospitalized, and court records show he later paid $3,000 bail and was released.
What Happened At The Boulder Highway Walmart
The confrontation began last Tuesday outside the Walmart before moving inside the store, where Swain was shot and a responding officer fatally shot Travis Ward. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department lists the incident as a fatal use-of-deadly-force case at the 5100 block of Boulder Highway, with its broader review still pending.
Police said Swain fought with Raqiya Smith and Amena Blue before Ward followed him into the store and opened fire. An earlier FOX5 report said Ward ran from the Walmart armed with a handgun, refused Officer Cristobal Magana's commands to drop it and was killed after the officer fired.
Separate Criminal Cases Move Forward
Smith and Blue were also taken into custody after the fight and face battery-related charges, according to police and court records. Swain's charges are separate from the shooting itself, and the allegations against all surviving defendants have not been tested at trial.
Swain's appearance brings a new court-focused chapter to a case that began with a fight outside a neighborhood big-box store and escalated into gunfire, a critical injury and a fatal police shooting. The Walmart incident remains under investigation as prosecutors proceed with the cases involving the three surviving defendants.
