Wailuku First Friday Opens Festivals of Aloha With Storm-Hit Farmers in Focus

Wailuku's Market Street goes car-free from 5:30 p.m. Friday, September 4, as Wailuku First Friday returns for its monthly run from 6 to 9 p.m., this time doubling as the official launch of the islandwide Festivals of Aloha. Vendors, live music, and a farmer-focused pop-up inside the Wailuku Garage will anchor the evening, which also carries fresh urgency after Hurricane Lala's mid-August rains battered Maui County's farmlands.

A Street Party With a Storm-Recovery Mission

According to Maui Now, the Wailuku Garage will feature a special takeover in partnership with GoFarm Hawaiʻi, including resource support for farmers affected by recent storms, an interactive photo gallery on Maui's farming community, agricultural educational activities for families, and a marketplace of Maui farmers' produce and value-added products. GoFarm Hawaiʻi is a beginning-farmer training program run by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources out of its Central Maui hub in Pūlehunui, according to the University of Hawaii System.

The farmer-focused programming lands weeks after Hurricane Lala dumped 6.6 cumulative inches of rain across Maui County, triggering flash flooding that damaged agricultural lands and local infrastructure, per Honolulu Civil Beat. In response, the Hawaiʻi State Legislature appropriated $100 million in emergency recovery funds for fiscal year 2026 to assist agricultural producers and local communities recovering from tropical storms, the outlet reports.

Music, Art and a Festival Launch

Beyond the garage, the town party will feature live sets from Makamae, playing 6 to 7:30 p.m., followed by Just Us from Hawaii Island featuring Kaniala Masoe from 7:45 to 9 p.m., per the event's lineup shared by Maui Now. Masoe is a Hawaiian falsetto vocalist who previously won first place in the Kindy Sproat Falsetto competition and has earned Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations, according to background from the Aloha Shirt Festival. DJ Z will also spin favorite hits at the Wailuku Garage during the evening.

Artist Bailey Onaga, who works under the alias B. Miyo, will open her exhibit Inaka Kānaka at Paradise Now Hawaiʻi the same evening, showcasing paintings inspired by nature and Hawaiʻi's native species, Maui Now notes. Elsewhere in town, Maui on Stage will fundraise by selling Dippin Dots at the Historic ʻĪao Theater, and Sabado Art Hawaii will offer voter registration to attendees.

Festivals of Aloha Opens With a Coastal Theme

Friday's gathering formally opens the Festivals of Aloha, the annual multi-island cultural celebration that runs across Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Hāna through September and October with music, dance, and traditional Hawaiian arts, according to the Festivals of Aloha. This year's theme, Ea Mai Ke Kai Mai — Rise Up From the Sea, ties into Governor Josh Green's declaration of 2026 as the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana, emphasizing ocean stewardship and following the state's 2025 Year of Our Community Forests initiative. The festival's signature event, the 24th Annual Richard Hoʻopiʻi Leo Kiʻekiʻe Hawaiian Falsetto Contest, honoring falsetto master Richard Hoʻopiʻi, is set for September 19.

Wailuku First Friday is presented in partnership with Kilohana by the Hawaiian Council, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority, the County of Maui, and KPOA 93.5 FM, and it continues to support local businesses and artisans across the district. Wailuku's slot as the first-Friday host fits into a countywide rotation in which Lahaina hosts the second Friday, Makawao the third, Kīhei the fourth, and Lānaʻi any fifth Friday, according to Maui Paradise Properties.

Parking and Road Closure Details

Market Street will close to vehicle traffic at 5:30 p.m., and any vehicles left on the street after closure will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense, Maui Now cautions. The nearby Wailuku Municipal Parking Garage will offer free parking after 6 p.m. The four-story, 393-space structure opened to the public in December 2023, completing a downtown redevelopment project first called for in the 2002 Wailuku-Kahului Community Plan, according to Honolulu Civil Beat.

Friday's event builds on momentum that has grown since Maui's Friday Town Parties returned from a pandemic-driven hiatus. Wailuku First Friday and Maui's broader Friday Town Parties were suspended in March 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions and stayed off the calendar for more than four years before officially returning in August 2024, per Maui Now.
