West Sacramento's Elkhorn Village campus is about to get a very different first-day-of-school backdrop: seven new mass-timber buildings, a redesigned front entry and a library built for flexible learning. The modernized K-8 school is scheduled to welcome students this week after a $55 million transformation funded by local bond dollars.

The Washington Unified School District says the campus will reopen Wednesday, after the project schedule was accelerated from an earlier January 2027 target. Most of the work is expected to be complete for the first day, while the kitchen and part of the multipurpose room are scheduled to finish in mid-September; the district says meals will continue through temporary service arrangements and a new outdoor eating area.
The project carries a total construction cost of $55,290,446 through the district's Measure Z bond program, according to the Washington Unified School District. It is the second of three major bond projects approved by the district, and officials say value engineering identified more than $2 million in savings during the planning process.
Mass Timber, New Drop-Off Areas And A Library Built For Flexibility
The seven new TimberQuest buildings add about 27,500 square feet for K-8 classrooms, special education, administration and a library, according to project partner TimberQuest. The campus also includes expanded kitchen and administrative spaces, giving the project a sustainability-forward construction angle without turning the school into an architecture lecture nobody asked for.
Studio W Architects says the redesign includes protected drop-off areas, clearer gated entrances, a separate early-childhood zone, new playground areas, an upper-grades quad and outdoor learning spaces. The front entry is also designed to welcome families bilingually, a fitting detail for a school whose dual-immersion program has become a central part of campus life.
Elkhorn Village serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade and offers both a traditional English program and Spanish-English dual immersion. The school's published program model begins with instruction that is 90% Spanish and 10% English in kindergarten, gradually reaching a 50/50 balance by fifth grade and continuing through middle school.
