West Virginia's baseball team is headed to Walt Disney World this winter, joining five other college programs for the inaugural Orlando Baseball Classic, a three-day round-robin tournament set for February 26-28, 2027, at the Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports. The field includes West Virginia, Pitt, St. John's, UCF, Michigan and Indiana State, with games scheduled throughout the weekend at the Disney complex's 9,500-seat ballpark.
The tournament comes courtesy of bdG Sports, which owns and operates the event, according to DC News Now. Company founder and president Brooks Downing said early-season destination events have become highly sought after, per that report. West Virginia head coach Steve Sabins said the Mountaineers are excited to compete in the new event, the same report notes.
West Virginia arrives with plenty of momentum. The Mountaineers posted a school-record 47-win season in 2026 and reached their first College World Series appearance, with Sabins earning NCBWA National Coach of the Year honors in his second season at the helm, as reported by the Marietta Times. Sabins took over as head coach in June 2024 and led WVU all the way to the CWS semifinals in Omaha. The seed report lists West Virginia as a 2026 College World Series participant, while St. John's is noted as a 2026 NCAA Super Regional participant and UCF as an NCAA Regional selection.
A Round-Robin Schedule Packed Into Three Days
The tournament opens February 26, 2027, with UCF facing Pitt at 7 p.m. ET and St. John's meeting Michigan at 11 a.m. ET, with Indiana State taking on West Virginia at 3 p.m. that afternoon. The following day brings West Virginia against St. John's at 11 a.m., Pitt versus Indiana State at 3 p.m., and Michigan facing UCF at 7 p.m. The final day, February 28, wraps with St. John's against Pitt at 11 a.m., West Virginia versus Michigan at 3 p.m., and UCF closing things out against Indiana State at 7 p.m.
That Pitt-St. John's matchup carries some history behind it. The game renews a rivalry between former Big East Conference opponents, according to Pitt Athletics, which notes Pitt and St. John's played annually in the Big East until Pitt departed for the ACC in 2013. The tournament falls in what the seed report describes as week 2 of the new college baseball season, and broadcast details have not yet been announced.
Indiana State's Return Engagement With bdG Sports
Indiana State's appearance in Orlando isn't its first rodeo with this tournament operator. The Sycamores won bdG Sports' inaugural 2026 Atlantis Collegiate Baseball Series in Nassau by defeating Penn State 2-1, per bdG Sports. That February event marked the first NCAA Division I regular-season baseball games ever played in Bahamian history, and it grew out of a partnership between bdG Sports and the Bahamas Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture. bdG Sports also manages more than 100 Division I regular-season basketball games annually, including Baha Mar Hoops, and runs two $1 million Korn Ferry Tour golf events in the Bahamas, part of a broader push by event promoters to expand neutral-site destination showcases from basketball into college baseball.
Disney's Ballpark Has Hosted Big League Baseball Before
The venue itself has a deep baseball resume. Built with major league dimensions when it opened in 1997, the Stadium at ESPN Wide World of Sports served as the Atlanta Braves' primary spring training home for 22 years, hosting the team's final spring exhibition there in March 2019 before the Braves relocated to North Port, according to Ballpark Digest. The ballpark has also hosted MLB regular-season games in 2007 and 2008, the 2006 World Baseball Classic, and the 2001 Atlantic 10 Conference baseball tournament, per the seed report. It briefly served as a spring training venue for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2023 after Hurricane Ian damaged Charlotte Sports Park, with the Rays playing initial exhibitions at Disney before shifting back to Tropicana Field for the regular season.
The stadium seats 9,500 with an additional 2,000 grass seats available, sitting within the broader ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, which spans more than 260 acres at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The complex includes 16 baseball and softball fields and a professional production center, and has accommodated 70 different sports featuring athletes from 70 different countries.
Ticket Sales, Fan Packages and Local Tax Dollars
Individual general admission tickets and discounted hotel blocks go on sale to the public tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET through OrlandoBaseballClassic.com, according to Pitt Athletics. Fan packages, separate from standalone tickets, include a three-night stay at a partner hotel, premium tickets behind home plate for every game, a two-day Walt Disney World park-hopper pass, a welcome reception at Epcot on February 25, 2027, food, non-alcoholic beverages, and evening fireworks, plus event apparel and a welcome swag bag. Airfare is not included in the packages.
Public money is already backing the event's promotion. Orange County commissioners approved $15,000 in Tourist Development Tax sports incentive funding for the Greater Orlando Sports Commission to market the tournament, according to Orange County Government records. Orange County handles sports promotion incentives through Visit Orlando using local hotel tax revenue, and the county's policy permits Visit Orlando to allocate up to $10 million annually in that revenue to attract regional and national sports events to Central Florida venues.
The Orlando Baseball Classic is the latest example of the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex drawing early-season collegiate showcases. Hoodline previously covered UCF's Thanksgiving hoops trip to the same Disney complex, another sign of the venue's growing role as a neutral site for college athletics. Whether bdG Sports intends to make the baseball tournament an annual fixture remains an open question, along with final broadcast arrangements and how ticket sales will play out once they open Friday.
