A 42-year-old woman is in critical condition after a white van struck her while she was lying in the roadway on Houston Avenue near Charlotte Street in Macon Wednesday night. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says the collision happened just before 8:11 p.m., and the woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
According to 41NBC News, deputies contacted the driver, a 69-year-old man, at the scene. The Bibb County Sheriff's Office says it will release the woman's identity once her family has been notified, and the collision remains under investigation.
The crash unfolded at an intersection that has seen trouble before. Back in October 2020, a 25-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car and injured at the very same intersection of Houston Avenue and Charlotte Street, a collision that stemmed from the cyclist entering traffic without yielding the right-of-way.
A County With One of Georgia's Worst Pedestrian Safety Records
This latest crash adds to a grim tally for Macon-Bibb County, which had already recorded 11 pedestrian deaths by late July, according to The Macon Newsroom. That total included a 63-year-old man in a wheelchair who was fatally struck by a law enforcement vehicle on Spring Street on July 20. The county logged 12 fatal pedestrian collisions in all of 2025, ending with the death of a 49-year-old woman struck by a truck on Broadway in mid-December.
The scale of the problem is stark in comparison to national numbers. Macon-Bibb County maintains a pedestrian fatality rate of roughly 11.1 per 100,000 residents, according to Safe Roads USA, a figure described as about five times the national average and among the highest per-capita rates in Georgia.
Right-of-Way Rules Could Shape the Investigation
Georgia law places specific obligations on pedestrians that investigators typically weigh in crashes like Wednesday's. Under O.C.G.A. § 40-6-92, pedestrians crossing a roadway outside a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection must yield to oncoming vehicles unless they have already safely entered the road, per the Wetherington Law Firm. A separate statute, Georgia Code § 40-6-96, makes it unlawful for a pedestrian to walk or stand in a roadway where a sidewalk is provided, and requires walking on the shoulder as far from the road's edge as practicable when no sidewalk exists.
It is not yet known whether either statute will factor into how investigators assess Wednesday's crash, since the Bibb County Sheriff's Office has not released findings on fault.
Officials Have Poured Money Into Fixing the Corridor
Macon-Bibb County has not ignored the problem. The county appointed a Traffic Safety Manager and adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan aimed at eliminating traffic deaths by prioritizing human life over vehicle speed, according to The Telegraph, which notes Macon serves as a regional transit hub with nearly 500,000 people passing through daily. In December 2025, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety awarded a $211,425.74 grant to the Macon Judicial Circuit to fund pedestrian safety enforcement and education across Bibb County.
Just up the road, state and local authorities opened a new roundabout in January 2025 at the multi-leg intersection of Houston Avenue, Broadway, and Pio Nono Avenue in South Macon, a project intended to improve traffic flow and reduce severe crashes, according to Prine Law Group. Federal Highway Administration studies cited in that report indicate roundabouts can cut fatal pedestrian crashes by around 40 percent. Local advocacy group Bike Walk Macon has also expanded its Open Streets program to the Houston Avenue corridor, pushing for car-free demonstrations and better pedestrian infrastructure in South Macon.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office has not released further details on the driver or the woman's condition since Wednesday night's crash.
