A woman died early Wednesday after a fire tore through her home on Willow Tower Court in Rolesville, gutting the two-story house and collapsing part of its roof. Firefighters found her on the second floor after flames broke through the roof and rear of the building, according to authorities. She lived alone and owned the home, and investigators believe she was in her 50s. Her identity has not been released.
Fire crews were dispatched to the address at 1:37 a.m. Wednesday and arrived roughly four minutes later, according to ABC11. About 30 firefighters from multiple agencies, including Rolesville and Wake Forest, converged on the scene, and the blaze was brought under control in about an hour.
Dispatchers Sent Crews to the Wrong Street Before Correcting Course
Radio dispatch logs reviewed by Legeros Fire Line show units were initially sent to 605 Tall Willow Court before callers and firefighters corrected the location to 802 Willow Tower Court, where heavy fire was already visible on the rear of the house. Wake County property records cited by the outlet identify the home as a 2,102-square-foot, two-story house built in 2011 on a 0.29-acre lot in the Granite Crest subdivision.
Medical Examiner, State Fire Investigators Now Involved
The Wake County Medical Examiner arrived at the scene after search crews recovered the woman's body from second-floor debris, per WRAL TV. Local, state and federal agencies are now collaborating on the origin-and-cause investigation, the station reported. Mutual aid came from four Wake County departments in total, Rolesville, Wake Forest, New Hope and Wendell, whose crews battled the fire from the rear of the structure as the roof gave way.
Rolesville Fire Chief Jason Deitch told ABC11 that the woman was located toward the back of the house. Nathan Lebond, also speaking to the outlet, called her death a tragedy. The fire marshal's office and state agencies are still working to determine what caused the blaze, per the same report.
A Fire Department Barely a Year Into Municipal Life
Rolesville's fire service only recently became a town-run agency. It operated for 67 years as an independent nonprofit, the Rolesville Rural Fire Department, founded in June 1958, before formally unifying with the municipal government on July 1, 2025, according to the Legeros Fire Blog. Deitch took over as chief in late 2025 during that transition, as Hoodline reported in his appointment last year.
North Carolina's Fatal Fires Have Been Climbing
The blaze adds to a troubling statewide pattern. The North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal reported 159 civilian fire deaths statewide in 2025, pointing to overnight residential fires and missing or inoperable smoke detectors as leading drivers. Preliminary state data showed 27 civilian fire deaths across 23 separate incidents by mid-February 2026, according to WCTI News 12.
Rolesville Has Seen Deadly House Fires Before
This is not the first severe residential fire near Rolesville in recent years. In December 2024, a fire on Rocky Knoll Lane destroyed a home and hospitalized four people, including a woman firefighters rescued and transported to the North Carolina Burn Center in Chapel Hill, as Hoodline reported at the time. A decade earlier, a December 2015 house fire in Rolesville killed a mother and her 3-year-old child and critically injured a second child, according to WRAL TV.
It remains unclear whether working smoke alarms were present inside the Willow Tower Court home. The Wake County Fire Marshal's office and state agencies are still working to determine what caused the fire, according to ABC11's report.
