A woman was shot and killed early Sunday in a Kansas City parking lot, where police say one or more shooters opened fire near an auto parts business. The killing unfolded before dawn at Independence Avenue and Van Brunt Boulevard.
Kansas City police received a call just before 4 a.m. about gunfire, according to KSHB 41. A Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy who was nearby also heard shots and responded, while officers and the deputy found an unresponsive adult woman in the parking lot at the intersection's northwest corner. EMS pronounced her dead at the scene.
Preliminary information indicates the woman was in the lot with an unknown number of other people when one or more suspects began shooting. Homicide detectives and crime-scene investigators were canvassing for witnesses, surveillance video and other evidence as they worked to determine what led to the attack.
