An unconscious woman with gunshot wounds was found early Sunday morning on the 1100 block of K Street SE in Southeast Washington, and responding medics pronounced her dead at the scene. Officers were called to the block, located in the Capitol Hill and Navy Yard area of Ward 6, around 5:30 a.m. after a report of a shooting. Police have not released her name to the public.
The Metropolitan Police Department is now investigating the fatal shooting and says three suspects fled the area in a silver sedan, according to WJLA. Detectives are still trying to determine what led to the shooting, and no arrests have been announced. The block sits near 11th Street SE and is within walking distance of the Potomac Avenue Metro station, in a mixed-use corridor of storefront retail and residential apartments, according to a LoopNet listing for the area.
A Corridor With a History of Gun Violence
Police coverage for the block falls to MPD's First District, which handles public safety and investigations across Capitol Hill, Navy Yard, and the surrounding Southeast and Southwest neighborhoods. The station's report does not indicate whether this shooting is connected to prior violence nearby, but the K Street SE corridor has seen repeated incidents in recent years. In August 2025, officers conducting a weekly illegal firearm recovery operation arrested a 20-year-old man on the very same 1100 block for carrying an unregistered handgun and fleeing police.
Just a few blocks away, an 18-year-old named Dontay Smith was fatally shot on the 300 block of K Street SE in February, prompting a First District homicide investigation and a reward offer from police. And in June 2024, a 31-year-old man was killed in an early-morning shooting in the Unit block of K Street SE in Navy Yard, after arriving at a hospital with gunshot wounds; officers had initially responded to reports of gunfire near 2:26 a.m. before learning the victim had already been taken elsewhere, per Hoodline's earlier reporting.
Homicides Down Citywide, But Weapon Assaults Climb
This latest killing lands amid a broader decline in deadly violence across the District. MPD statistics show 66 homicides were recorded citywide between January 1 and August 7, a 32% drop compared to the 97 homicides logged over the same stretch in 2025. That follows a similar trend in 2025, when the city recorded 127 homicides for the full year, down 32% from 187 in 2024, alongside a 29% reduction in total violent crime.
Yet the picture is not uniformly improving. MPD data also shows assaults with a dangerous weapon rose 42% through early August, with 760 reported incidents compared to 537 during the same period last year, even as overall property crime declined. That divergence underscores why non-fatal shootings and weapon assaults remain a pressing concern for Ward 6 residents even as the city's homicide count trends downward.
