A wrong-way driver entered the northbound lanes of Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway Friday night, triggering a five-vehicle crash that killed one person and left two others in critical condition. The wreck unfolded near 55th Street as emergency crews worked through a severely damaged stretch of I-94.
Illinois State Police said the driver entered northbound I-94 at 31st Street and traveled southbound before the collision near 55th Street, according to ABC7 Chicago. The crash involved five vehicles, officials said.
Northbound Traffic Diverted During Crash Response
Chicago fire officials said one person was removed from a vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Northbound traffic was diverted off I-94 at 67th Street while Illinois State Police investigated, ABC7 Chicago reported. The crash scene was visible from Chopper 7 shortly after 7 p.m., with multiple vehicles appearing heavily damaged.
Authorities had not released the identities of the person killed or the injured victims in the initial report. The circumstances that led the driver to travel the wrong way remained under investigation.
