Lilyia Eggers had played football since she was 8 years old, but nothing compared to the moment Patrick Mahomes saw her at a stadium tunnel and signed her jersey. The 13-year-old and her family drove more than 20 hours to Kansas City to attend her first NFL game, and they left with a keepsake she called a dream come true.
The trip brought the Eggers family to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs' season home opener, a 31-10 win over the divisional rival Denver Broncos, according to KCTV. The family made a lengthy road trip to reach Kansas City. Lilyia's father, Bryson Eggers, said Mahomes is a great role model for his daughter, and Lilyia herself said she simply likes the star quarterback.
A Plan Years in the Making
Getting close enough to Mahomes for an autograph took more than luck. The family arrived at the stadium three hours before kickoff after researching the best way to get an item signed, according to Lilyia's aunt, Shelby Eggers.
Lilyia brought two pens and a clipboard, tucking the clipboard behind her jersey as she and her family waited for hours before the game.
Sprinting to the Tunnel as the Clock Ran Out
As time expired on the scoreboard, Lilyia and her family made their move toward the tunnel. She held up a poster, and Mahomes waved back at her.
Mahomes ultimately signed Lilyia's jersey, capping off the family's marathon drive with the memento they'd traveled across the country to secure. Lilyia described the autograph as a dream come true. Arrowhead itself, one of the NFL's oldest and largest open-air venues, has operated since 1972 and recently underwent a conversion back to football after hosting matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a transformation Hoodline previously detailed.
