A 26-year-old motorcyclist is dead after a chain-reaction crash before dawn on Zaragoza Road in Far East El Paso, a collision that began with a rear-end impact and ended with the rider thrown directly into the path of an oncoming pickup truck. Police officers responded to the 2300 block of the road around 2:51 a.m. Sunday to find the rider had died from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the El Paso Police Department, the motorcyclist was riding a Honda CVR northbound on Zaragoza when it rear-ended a 2002 Ford F-150 also traveling northbound. The impact threw the rider from the motorcycle and into the southbound lane, where he was struck by a 2020 Ford F-150 heading the opposite direction. EPPD's Special Traffic Investigations unit, the department's specialized collision-reconstruction team, responded to the scene to piece together how the crash unfolded.
Investigators are examining how the crash unfolded, and police have not released findings on what caused the first collision.
A Rising Toll on El Paso Roads
Sunday's death pushed El Paso's 2026 traffic fatality count to 45, surpassing the 43 fatalities police had recorded over the same span in 2025. The corridor where the crash occurred has seen repeated serious motorcycle crashes in recent months. In a crash involving a motorcycle and vehicle near Zaragoza, two people were injured, according to footage shared by KTSM 9 News.
Statewide Numbers Underscore the Risk
The El Paso crash lands within a broader statewide pattern. Texas recorded 581 motorcyclist fatalities in 2024 and 557 motorcyclist deaths in 2025. Hoodline reported that 37 percent of Texas motorcycle deaths in 2025 occurred in or near intersections.
Whether the rider was wearing a helmet has not been disclosed. Texas Transportation Code Section 661.003 requires helmets only for motorcycle operators and passengers under 21, while riders 21 and older may legally forgo one if they have completed a state-approved safety course or carry qualifying health insurance, according to Universal Law Group. The statute includes provisions related to that exemption. The Texas Department of Transportation has cited research on helmet safety.
This marks the latest in a string of fatal motorcycle crashes EPPD has investigated in 2026. EPPD's investigation into Sunday's crash remains active, and no additional details on potential charges or contributing factors had been released.
