An 80-year-old pedestrian died early Friday morning after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing East Cedar Avenue in the East Las Vegas Valley, and police say the driver showed signs of impairment. The crash happened at about 5:17 a.m. west of North Eastern Avenue, and the victim was rushed to a hospital before later dying from their injuries.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a 2017 Nissan Titan was traveling westbound on East Cedar Avenue when it struck the pedestrian as they crossed outside a marked or implied crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to University Medical Center's trauma center, where they later died from their injuries. Police identified the driver as 38-year-old Jessica Cortez, who remained at the scene, though the department's statement did not say whether she was taken into custody.
A Legal Threshold With No Middle Ground
Nevada law draws a hard line for cases involving impaired driving and a death. Under NRS 484C.430, driving under the influence resulting in death is classified as a Category B felony carrying a mandatory prison term of 2 to 20 years and fines between $2,000 and $5,000, according to Justia Law. That statute strictly prohibits judges from granting probation or suspending sentences for felony DUI convictions resulting in death. This is not the only fatal pedestrian crash to hit East Las Vegas this month. Statewide, Nevada recorded 230 roadway deaths between January 1 and August 31, 2026, an 11.88% drop from the 261 deaths logged over the same period in 2025, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Clark County alone recorded 127 traffic deaths through August, a 24.85% decline from the 169 fatalities reported in the same window last year. Yet statewide pedestrian fatalities totaled 63 through August 31, down just 3.08% from the 65 pedestrian deaths logged during the same eight months of 2025 — a far slower decline than the drop in overall traffic deaths, the Sun's report notes.
