A reported armed robbery near the 900 block of Pear Street in unincorporated Harris County spiraled into a deadly, multi-jurisdictional chase Sunday night, ending with one person shot dead near John Alber Road and Bauman Road in north Houston. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the incident possibly began in the Aldine area near Hardy Toll Road before crossing into Houston Police Department territory.
According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the Harris County Sheriff's Office emergency dispatch center received a call for service on Saturday reporting an armed robbery. The caller told HCSO he had just been robbed at gunpoint, possibly near the 900 block of Pear Street, and said he pursued the suspect in his own vehicle. As reported by KHOU, the pursuit carried the caller out of unincorporated Harris County and into Houston Police Department jurisdiction, where he reported being shot on John Alber Road.
Second Scene Near Bauman Road
The follow-up scene was located at John Alber Road and Bauman Road, per HCSO. One person was shot and later pronounced deceased, but the sheriff's office says it does not yet know whether the deceased was the original caller who reported the robbery or the suspect he had been chasing. Media partners were directed to stage at 10800 Bauman Road while HCSO homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the John Alber Road and Bauman Road location.
The uncertainty over the victim's identity underscores how quickly a robbery report can turn into a confusing, cross-agency investigation. Harris County contains more than 60 independent law enforcement agencies, according to a research report from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, creating jurisdictional overlap that regularly requires coordination between departments during pursuits and major crime investigations.
Legal Questions Around Citizen Pursuit
Whether the caller was legally justified in chasing the suspect himself raises separate questions under Texas law. Article 14.01 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure allows a private citizen to make a warrantless arrest if a felony or an offense against the public peace happens in their direct presence or view, according to Justia Law. But the use of deadly force to recover property or stop a fleeing suspect is far more restricted.

The Aldine-Hardy Toll Road corridor has seen repeated public safety incidents requiring deputy response. In September 2025, Harris County deputies responded to a shooting near the 1100 block of Hill Road near Hardy Toll Road after stray gunfire from target shooting struck a victim close to youth soccer fields, according to FOX 26 Houston. Hoodline has also reported a fatal shooting along Bauman Road earlier this year in which a suspect fled toward Hardy Toll Road.
