Arnold's Lobster & Clam Bar, the roadside seafood institution that has fed generations of travelers along Route 6 in Eastham, has closed after 50 years in business. Owner Nick Nickerson announced the closure in a Facebook post, thanking customers and workers for “50 unforgettable years” and saying he would be selling the restaurant.
Nickerson's announcement, reported by Boston 25 News, struck an emotional tone. “It is difficult to put into words what Arnold's has meant to me and my family,” he wrote, adding that the restaurant's memories and friendships would remain in his heart forever. He credited loyal customers and dedicated employees for the business's growth over the decades.
The restaurant began life as Arnold's Drive-In, a 1950s-themed spot with roller-skating car-hops and a name inspired by the sitcom Happy Days, according to Arnold's Lobster & Clam Bar's own account of its history. Its history includes a malt-shop menu, and Arnold's became one of the Outer Cape's most recognizable seafood stops.
From Fire Damage to Family Destination
A 1993 fire damaged the original building, but rather than scaling back, Arnold's rebuilt bigger. The company added a gourmet ice cream stand and an 18-hole mini-golf course complete with waterfalls and a pirate ship, transforming a roadside seafood shack into a multi-attraction family destination along the highway.
Arnold's sits on US Route 6 near the Cape Cod Rail Trail, according to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.
National Fame and a Viral Blue Lobster
Over the years, Arnold's racked up a number of accolades and was named one of America's favorite seafood dives. Rachel Ray once called it the number one secret spot on Cape Cod for the best lobster roll, per the seed reporting from Boston 25 News.
The restaurant also made national headlines in 2019 after discovering an extremely rare blue lobster in a shipment, a genetic anomaly estimated to occur in roughly 1 in 2 million lobsters. Nickerson donated the crustacean to the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station, which referred to it as Stanley, according to a video posted by the St. Louis Aquarium.

A 2021 Controversy That Lingered
Nickerson's tenure was not without controversy. In January 2021, Nickerson said he did not regret attending the January 6 rally, according to the Provincetown Independent. He issued a public apology on social media days later after facing swift criticism on community pages, though the episode created lingering community tension around the business.
Part of a Broader Wave of Cape Cod Closures
Arnold's exit lands amid a broader reshuffling of Cape Cod's legacy dining and hospitality scene. Hyannis fixture Sam Diego's Mexican Cookery is scheduled to close permanently on November 15, 2026, after 44 years due to rising post-pandemic operating costs, as Sam Diego's closure coverage detailed.
For now, Nickerson plans to sell the business. The future of the Eastham property, its mini-golf course, and its ice cream stand remains to be seen.
