At Coffin Club, the audience is part of the investigation. The temporary vampire-themed bar takes over the basement of Fountain City Winery in Kansas City, where guests encounter characters and clues while trying to solve the fictional killing of Elena Thorne. The experience, created by Apparition with the winery’s owners, combines a working winery with a story guests can explore rather than simply watch, The Kansas City Pitch reported.
The audience becomes part of the puzzle
The mystery unfolds through the fictional tensions among vampires, werewolves and witches. Guests can move through the space, examine tactile clues and speak with characters; the central question is who killed Elena and why. The Pitch reported that puzzle makers Greg Bowman and Delaney Rose, as well as Apparition owner Edward Schmalz, did not know who the killer was. That leaves the solution unresolved, rather than promising a single reveal already known to the event’s organizers.
That guest-driven format has a local point of comparison, though not an equivalent. KCUR reported that David Hanson’s play Audience, first produced at the 2016 Kansas City Fringe Festival, placed spectators onstage among simultaneous performances and let them move between them—but barred interaction with the actors. Coffin Club instead invites guests to engage with its characters and clues. The productions differ in purpose and format; together, they show distinct ways a performance can shape what its audience does.
A winery setting, temporarily transformed
Coffin Club turns a winery basement into a fictional nightspot while Fountain City Winery continues operating as a business during the changeover, according to the Pitch. The transformation takes about a week, the outlet reported. More broadly, a 2024 visitor page from MO Wines describes Missouri wineries as hosting events and says many provide event spaces. That page does not quantify how common such events are, so Coffin Club is best understood as one particular collaboration, not evidence of a statewide trend.
The event listing on OpenTable describes The Murder at the Coffin Club as a $15 experience at 1409 W. 11th St. in Kansas City. It says the experience is for guests 21 and older on Fridays and Saturdays and open to all ages on Thursdays and Sundays, with the bar opening at dusk on event nights.
