Authorities are seeking the man accused of shooting a motel guest along Augusta's Washington Road corridor. Dontrell Maurice Moss, 40, of Thomson, Georgia, was wanted in connection with the shooting, which occurred just after midnight in late August.
According to WRDW, the sheriff's office had issued public wanted notices for Moss following the shooting. Moss had been sought on warrants for two counts of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and criminal damage to property stemming from the incident, according to The Jail Report. Investigators allege Moss shot another man and fled the hotel.
A Shooting at an Augusta Motel
The victim was identified as 36-year-old Davon McCladdie of Martinez, Georgia. McCladdie was rushed to Wellstar MCG Health hospital.
The shooting happened at the Super 8 Motel at 3026 Washington Road, according to CrimeLocal. It is not the first time law enforcement has responded to a shooting at that address — the same motel was the site of an officer-involved shooting in April 2020 that prompted an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Charges Carry Steep Mandatory Penalties
Under Georgia Code § 16-5-21 and § 16-11-106, felony aggravated assault carries a sentence of one to 20 years in prison, while possessing or using a firearm during a violent crime carries a mandatory consecutive five-year sentence, according to Justia Law. That means any conviction on a firearm count would be added on top of whatever time is imposed for the assault charges, not served alongside it.
Moss was listed as wanted in connection with the shooting.

Richmond County has recorded at least 15 homicides in 2026 through early September, a pace that has kept deputies busy managing multiple high-profile shooting cases throughout the summer.
Richmond County deputies have also leaned on federal partners this year, including the U.S. Marshals Southeastern Fugitive Task Force, to run down violent crime suspects who flee the area — a tactic that helped capture wanted Augusta shooting suspects in a separate case in August.
