Legend Larry's plans to open its first Milwaukee restaurant in early October, bringing the Sheboygan-born wing chain to the long-vacant Brady Street space once occupied by Balzac Wine Bar. The restaurant will anchor its fifth Wisconsin location at 1716 N. Arlington Place, a storefront inside the Passeggio commercial complex.
The Milwaukee debut, first reported by Urban Milwaukee, will occupy 2,520 square feet with 99 seats and 15 tap lines, according to the outlet. Its kitchen is planned to have four commercial deep fryers, each with a 75-pound capacity, while the company expects to staff three kitchen workers during peak hours. Milwaukee will be the chain's fifth Wisconsin location, joining restaurants in Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Manitowoc and Green Bay, an expansion detailed by Urban Milwaukee.
A Wing Bar Born From a Corner Tavern
Legend Larry's began in Sheboygan after founder Larry Schaefer, a former trucker, bought a tavern from his brother-in-law in 2001 and converted it into a wing-focused bar, according to Urban Milwaukee's earlier coverage. Schaefer and his wife, Tammy, ran the business for years before their son Dane Schaefer and daughter Amber Willis became involved; Dane now serves as the company's spokesperson.
The chain has entered the National Buffalo Wing Festival contest every year since 2005, when its Traditional Medium recipe won first prize, the outlet reports. The Buffalo festival draws about 30,000 people and features restaurants competing in more than 20 categories. At the 2026 event, Legend Larry's entered the Hot, Sweet Heat, BBQ and Traditional Medium categories, taking home blue ribbons in Hot, Sweet Heat and BBQ, plus a bronze ribbon in Traditional Medium.
Filling A Storefront That Sat Empty For Years
Balzac Wine Bar operated at 1716 N. Arlington Place for 18 years before co-owners Leslie Montemurro and Scott Johnson closed it on Nov. 22, 2023, citing post-pandemic financial and labor pressures, as previously reported by Urban Milwaukee. Milwaukee Magazine also reported that the restaurant's 18-year run ended that day. Balzac had been considered a pioneer of Milwaukee's modern small-plates dining scene when it opened in 2005.
A craft beer and pizza concept, Suburban North 48° Crust & Craft, had submitted license applications in December 2024 to take over the former Balzac location. Landlord Julilly Kohler had sought local, non-chain operators for the space and would not entertain plans to turn the location into a club, the outlet notes. Legend Larry's will join La Masa, King Crab Shack and Apollo as restaurants operating within the Passeggio complex.
What the Brady Street turnover means
The former Balzac space has been in transition since the restaurant's 18-year run ended on Nov. 22, 2023, according to Milwaukee Magazine. A proposed Suburban North 48° Crust & Craft tenancy followed in 2024, but Legend Larry's is the next restaurant identified in the space. The change comes as the broader district works to support its business corridor. The Brady Street Business Improvement District says it represents businesses along Brady Street and works with area organizations to support the neighborhood's continued growth; its 2025 annual report also says the district enhanced security by contracting with Prolific Arms, a professional security services provider.
Licensing Details And What's On The Menu
Legend Larry's filed a license application for the Milwaukee restaurant, according to city licensing records reviewed by the outlet. The Milwaukee restaurant's license application projects 74 percent of sales from food, 21 percent from alcohol, 3 percent from entertainment and 2 percent from merchandise. The location will serve until midnight and accept both cash and electronic payments, and the lease runs through 2032 at $4,200 in monthly rent.
The Milwaukee menu will feature sauced wings and sandwiches, drawing from the roughly dozen sauces the chain offers, though it will not include salads. Before opening, Legend Larry's still must pass final inspections to receive its certificate of occupancy. The building sits within the designated Brady Street Historic District.
Beyond The Restaurant Floor
Legend Larry's has also expanded beyond its restaurants by bottling its wing sauces for sale in regional supermarket chains such as Piggly Wiggly and supplying wholesale sauce programs to hundreds of Great Lakes-area food-service venues, according to the National Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival.
The new restaurant arrives on a stretch of Brady Street that has drawn heightened attention this year. A local business district safety pilot program, extended through Labor Day to manage late-night crowds, was put in place after Hoodline's coverage of deadly June shootings on the corridor. A July fire damaged the building housing La Masa Empanada Bar. Legend Larry's opening will add a new chapter to a stretch of Arlington Place that has seen significant turnover and disruption in recent years.
