Johnston Square is an East Baltimore neighborhood undergoing multi-phase redevelopment, including a 109-unit apartment complex being built between East Biddle and East Chase Streets as part of the ReBUILD Johnston Square effort, according to the Somerset Development Company.

This isn't the first violent incident along the Ashland Avenue corridor this year. In February, East Baltimore officers locked down the 1500 block of Ashland Avenue after a fatal shooting, deploying forensic drones to document cartridge casings and other evidence, Hoodline reported at the time.
Greenmount Avenue's Recent History of Gun Violence
Separate violent incidents were reported near Green Mount Cemetery and in the 3100 block in 2026. Homicide detectives opened an investigation after an unidentified man was shot outside the walls of Green Mount Cemetery in the 500 block of East North Avenue on August 24, according to Hoodline. Back in February, Northern District officers responded to an overnight shooting inside a commercial venue in the 3100 block that wounded a 36-year-old man, according to the Baltimore Police Department, which led to an attempted murder arrest of a 42-year-old suspect days later.
