San Diego College of Continuing Education has kicked off a series of community discussions to find a permanent new name for its Barrio Logan campus, months after the facility dropped its César E. Chávez name amid sexual abuse allegations against the labor icon. The campus is currently going by the placeholder Harbor View Campus while the San Diego Community College District figures out what comes next.
A Temporary Name With Deep Roots
According to FOX 5 San Diego, the SDCCD began the renaming discussions after allegations emerged that César E. Chávez, long celebrated as a powerful figure in the farmworker rights movement, groomed and sexually abused young girls who worked for his movement. The report cited by the station traces to the New York Times, which published its findings on March 18, 2026. Per the same reporting, Chávez's longtime colleague Dolores Huerta later revealed that he assaulted her while she worked alongside him in the movement, resulting in two pregnancies.
Those revelations set off a swift reassessment of Chávez's legacy across California, and public institutions throughout the state have grappled with his name ever since, the station's report notes. Schools, public buildings, and streets have removed dedications honoring him in the months since. The SDCCD Board of Trustees itself voted unanimously on April 6, 2026, to temporarily rename the campus Harbor View Campus. The campus has carried the Chávez name since it opened in 2015, according to City Times Media.
Barrio Logan's Broader Reckoning
The campus is far from the only Barrio Logan landmark shedding Chávez's name. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria signed Executive Order No. 2026-01 on March 20, 2026, directing city departments to identify and remove references to Chávez across municipal facilities, programs, and signage, according to the City of San Diego. The San Diego City Council followed in April, voting to rename the 0.8-mile César E. Chávez Parkway to Chicano Park Boulevard, as reported by KPBS.
Hoodline previously reported that the César Chávez waterfront park renaming was headed to a Port of San Diego vote today, September 23, as the Board of Port Commissioners moves to redesignate the site as Chicano Park on the Bay. That park originally opened in 1990 as Crosby Street Park before being renamed for Chávez in 2002, according to Times of San Diego.
How SDCCE Is Gathering Input
At SDCCE, per FOX 5 San Diego, the district is gathering input from students, faculty, and community members through restorative renaming circles designed to allow open discussions about the change, along with a survey where community members can weigh in on the process. Brenna Leon Sandeford said the discussion will include everyone, according to the station's report. Recommendations for a permanent name are expected to go before the board at the end of December, per SDCCE.
The Barrio Logan campus is part of the San Diego Community College District.
The scale of the reckoning is national. Before the March 2026 revelations, Chávez's name was commemorated on more than 130 public streets, schools, parks, and monuments across at least 19 U.S. states, according to the Associated Press. California lawmakers also moved at the state level to redesignate the March 31 holiday from César Chávez Day to Farmworkers Day.
For now, SDCCE's Barrio Logan campus remains Harbor View Campus while the community works toward a name it hopes will last.
