A 37-year-old Beltsville man is facing charges after Anne Arundel County police say he pointed a handgun at another driver during a road rage dispute outside a Pasadena bank. Police later recovered a handgun in a wood line along the route.
Bank Parking Lot Confrontation Escalates Fast
According to WBFF, police were told the suspect, later identified as Stanley Keith Sargeant, pointed a handgun at a man in the parking lot of Orrstown Bank on Jumpers Hole Road before speeding off in his car. Anne Arundel County police had responded to the original road rage complaint at around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Woodland Road and Obrecht Road, according to an Anne Arundel County Government press release detailing the incident under case number 26-730399. Officers tracked Sargeant's white Dodge Ram pickup and detained him at the intersection of West Pasadena Road and Melchior Road, per the station's report.
While canvassing the route Sargeant allegedly took between the bank lot and the traffic stop, an officer recovered a black Polymer 80 9mm handgun in a wood line off the roadway, county officials said.
Maryland Law Sets Firearm and Assault Rules
Under Maryland Public Safety Code § 5-703, privately made firearms are subject to serialization requirements that can be met by having specified information applied by an authorized licensee or by registering the firearm with Maryland State Police, with exceptions, according to the Giffords Law Center. Under Maryland Criminal Law Code § 3-202, first-degree assault involves intentionally causing or attempting to cause serious physical injury; use of a firearm may support such a charge, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 25 years in prison, per Scott MacMullan Law.
Maryland law also restricts how handguns can be transported in vehicles. Under Criminal Law Code § 4-203, knowingly transporting a handgun in a car without a valid wear-and-carry permit carries a mandatory minimum of 30 days in jail and up to five years in prison for a first offense, according to FrizWoods. It remains unclear whether Sargeant holds such a permit, and Anne Arundel County officials have not released details on the specific charges filed against him.
Case Falls to County's Eastern District
The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Eastern District. Sargeant is from Beltsville, in Prince George's County.
