A 20-year-old man remained in critical but stable condition Friday night after he was struck by a car while crossing Telegraph Avenue at Carleton Street in Berkeley, an impact severe enough to knock him unconscious at the scene and trigger a multi-block road closure that lasted past 1 a.m. The driver, a 64-year-old Oakland woman heading southbound on Telegraph, stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police.
The crash happened at about 10:09 p.m. Friday, and initial police findings indicate the young man was crossing within a crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle traveling roughly 25 to 30 mph, according to The Berkeley Scanner. The force of the collision knocked him unconscious, and he was rushed Code 3 — under emergency lights and sirens — to Highland Hospital in Oakland, which serves as the region's Level I trauma center for Alameda County. KRON4 reports the Berkeley Police Department described the victim's condition as critical but stable in the crash's aftermath.
Police said drug or alcohol impairment was not a factor in the crash, per the same reporting. Berkeley's Fatal Accident Investigation Team responded to handle the case, a unit that, per city procedures, is activated not only for deadly crashes but whenever injuries are severe or life-threatening.
Hours-Long Closure Snarled Southside Streets
Following the crash, Berkeley police issued an advisory at 10:40 p.m. shutting down Telegraph Avenue between Derby and Parker streets while investigators worked the scene. The roadway did not reopen until around 1:30 a.m., the station's report notes, giving crash reconstruction specialists time to document the scene in the dense, pedestrian-heavy Southside neighborhood near campus housing.
The stretch of Telegraph near Carleton Street is not new to serious pedestrian collisions. In July 2022, a female pedestrian was hospitalized with major injuries after being struck along Telegraph Avenue between Ward and Carleton streets, according to KTVU FOX 2.

The victim's updated medical status at Highland Hospital has not been released.
