A man was grazed by gunfire on the 24000 block of Blossom Crest Lane in Spring on Tuesday afternoon, and deputies detained a suspect after deploying a K-9 unit, drone, and air support to comb the neighborhood. The injured man was taken to a local hospital, while the suspect ended up in custody as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Deputies Lock Down the Block
According to ABC13 Houston, the Harris County Constable Precinct 4's office reported that one man was detained and another was taken to a hospital after the shooting in the Spring area. Authorities said the injured man was grazed by gunfire, and the station reports that the investigation into the case remained ongoing. Precinct 4 searched for a suspect in the possible shooting on the 24000 block of Blossom Crest Lane and set up a perimeter around the incident area while the search played out.
The block sits inside the Villages of Spring Oaks subdivision in ZIP code 77373, a residential pocket of northern Harris County served by Spring Independent School District, according to HAR.com. The same block has drawn a heavy law enforcement response before. Back in October 2017, Precinct 4 deputies and a SWAT team responded to a weapon disturbance on the 24000 block of Blossom Crest Lane after a suspect fired a gun into the air, pointed it at a woman, and fled, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. Deputies determined at the time that the suspect had escaped through a window or back door before SWAT breached the home.
K-9 and Drone Units Join the Search
To track down the suspect this week, the same station's report notes that Precinct 4 deployed a K-9, drone unit, and air support to assist ground deputies with the search. Precinct 4 regularly relies on this combination of tactical assets — including its dedicated K-9 unit and aerial drone teams — to establish perimeters and assist deputies during active manhunts across northern Harris County. As a precautionary measure, Precinct 4 notified nearby schools while the perimeter was in place, per the same account. The suspect was ultimately apprehended, the office said.
Precinct 4, led by Constable Mark Herman, is the largest constable agency in the country, with more than 670 sworn deputies and an annual budget of roughly $103 million covering over 520 square miles and 1.1 million residents. The agency's footprint helps explain why county deputies — not a municipal police force — responded to Blossom Crest Lane: Spring is an unincorporated census-designated place with no city hall or police department of its own, leaving Precinct 4 Constables and the Harris County Sheriff's Office to handle primary law enforcement, according to HAR.com. The Spring CDP is home to more than 62,000 residents, roughly 25 miles north of downtown Houston.
Another Gun-Related Call Around Spring
In August, deputies responded to a parking lot argument over a firearm on East Cypresswood Drive that left a victim with a gunshot wound to the leg and led to an aggravated robbery arrest, as Hoodline previously reported.
Should charges follow the Blossom Crest Lane shooting, Texas law treats using or exhibiting a deadly weapon during an assault as aggravated assault, a second-degree felony carrying 2 to 20 years in prison and fines up to $10,000, according to FindLaw. It remains unclear what specifically triggered the confrontation on Blossom Crest Lane or the relationship, if any, between the detained suspect and the man taken to the hospital. Precinct 4's investigation into the case continued Tuesday.
