A Blue Springs woman and two children were injured Tuesday night after their SUV veered into a closed construction lane on eastbound I-70 near Grain Valley and slammed into a concrete belt placer, a piece of heavy road equipment. The crash happened just before 10:20 p.m. near the North Main Street exit, sending all three occupants to area hospitals.
The driver, a 43-year-old Blue Springs woman, was behind the wheel of a 2023 Volkswagen Taos with a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl inside, according to the KCTV report on the crash. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center, while the boy sustained moderate injuries and the girl suffered minor injuries; both children were transported to Children's Mercy Hospital. Missouri State Highway Patrol crash records confirm the SUV was traveling east in lanes that had been closed for construction when it struck the equipment.
The crash occurred just before 10:20 p.m., according to the report. Emergency crews responded to the scene.
A Massive Construction Zone Turns Dangerous After Dark
The crash site sits inside a much larger construction footprint. The stretch of I-70 near Grain Valley is part of a larger statewide transportation program described as costing $2.8 billion and covering nearly 200 miles, while the local project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. At the time of the crash, MoDOT had active traffic shifts, narrowed lanes and a reduced 55 mph speed limit in place on eastbound I-70 between mile markers 24 and 27 for ongoing pavement reconstruction.
It's not yet clear what led the SUV into the closed lane where the equipment was staged. The SUV entered a lane closed to traffic.
A Statewide Pattern of Equipment Strikes
This crash adds to a troubling statewide trend. MoDOT data shows protective construction vehicles equipped with truck-mounted attenuators were struck 50 times in Missouri work zones in 2025. In the second quarter of 2026 alone, the agency recorded eight fatal crashes inside state work zones, resulting in eight deaths, five of which involved vulnerable road users.
The broader decline has occurred even as construction-zone collisions continue climbing.
The Grain Valley crash follows a string of similar incidents across the region this year. In August, a driver entered an active work zone on eastbound I-70 near Jackson Avenue in Kansas City and hit a dirt mound, sending the vehicle airborne and rolling it, as Hoodline previously reported.
Growth Continues Around the Grain Valley Interchange
The I-70 corridor through Grain Valley is undergoing construction. For now, though, the interchange remains a work zone where lanes have been closed.
