Houston police officers converged on the 3800 block of Searle Drive in the Near Northside neighborhood Monday afternoon after a dead body was recovered from Little Whiteoak Bayou. Officers were called to the scene near Searle Drive and Trimble Street at about 2:30 p.m., and investigators say the body showed no obvious signs of trauma. The victim has not been identified as of publication.
According to ABC13 Houston, the Houston Police Department confirmed it received the report of the body in the waterway and that an autopsy by the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains underway.
Why Detectives Respond Before an Autopsy Is Done
Even though the body showed no visible trauma, Houston Police Department protocol still calls for Homicide Division detectives to preliminarily respond to and process unattended death scenes whenever criminal activity cannot be immediately ruled out, according to prior Hoodline reporting on death-investigation protocols. That same coverage notes that Article 49.25 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure requires county medical examiners to conduct an inquest and autopsy on all non-natural, sudden, or unattended deaths in their jurisdiction, regardless of whether trauma is initially apparent.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences handles death investigations and crime laboratory services countywide. Drug toxicology testing averages 47 days, while DNA analysis averages 87 days. Residents near Searle Drive and Trimble Street may wait more than a month for additional findings.

Monday's recovery is not an isolated event for the bayou system. Houston police dive teams previously pulled two bodies from local waterways, including one from White Oak Bayou near Studemont Street, in separate incidents after Hurricane Beryl in 2024. More broadly, Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences records show at least 24 bodies were recovered from Houston-area waterways in 2025, up sharply from nine in 2023, according to EL PAÍS.

For now, police have offered no timeline on identification and say the investigation is ongoing.
