A person walking the Bedford Heritage Trail stumbled onto a grim discovery Saturday afternoon, September 12, 2026: a body lying along a steep embankment above the Merrimack River. New Hampshire State Police were dispatched to the area near Hawthorne Road around 3:22 p.m., and the person had reportedly been in the water for some time before being found.
First responders accessed the trail through its Moore's Crossing Road entrance and met the trail walker who reported the discovery about three-quarters of a mile down the path, according to InDepthNH.org. Crews then deployed a specialized rope system to retrieve the body because of the steep embankment. Scene responders determined the individual was an adult male who appeared to have been deceased for an extended period, according to InDepthNH.org, before he was transferred to a local funeral home and the state medical examiner.
As Boston 25 News reports, authorities say the death does not appear suspicious and poses no threat to the public. State police have withheld the man's identity, and an autopsy is planned to determine the official cause of death. The investigation remains developing, and the station notes that his name has not been released pending notification and further examination.
A Trail With Its Own History and Rules
The Bedford Heritage Trail is a one-mile public path running from Moore's Crossing Road to the Bedford Pumping Station, and it closes every year from December 1 to April 1 to protect roosting American bald eagles, according to Bedford Parks and Recreation. Reports on the incidents describe New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol participation in water-rescue and body-recovery operations. The Bedford man's remains were also transferred to the state medical examiner, and an autopsy was planned to determine the official cause of death.
Part of a Pattern Along the River Corridor
Saturday's recovery is not an isolated event along the Merrimack. On August 11, Marine Patrol officers recovered the body of an unresponsive 34-year-old man from the river near the Taylor Falls Bridge along the Hudson-Nashua border after a multi-hour night search, and that death was also not initially believed to be suspicious, per the same Patch report. On July 15, 19-year-old Manchester resident Robert Batchelder drowned in the Merrimack in Canterbury after getting into distress while swimming with a co-worker, prompting Marine Patrol and Concord Fire to deploy boats for the recovery, according to a Facebook post from a WMUR reporter. And in April, state and local agencies launched a multi-agency search along the river in Hooksett after a person fell into the water from a railroad bridge near Riverside and Main streets, per a WMUR Facebook post.
