A man suffering life-threatening stab wounds drove himself to a 7-Eleven gas station and convenience store in Bonsall late Friday night seeking help, arriving in a pickup truck with visible blood inside and outside the vehicle. San Diego County sheriff’s deputies say the attack happened elsewhere in the rural community before the victim made his way to the store to get aid.
According to Village News, witnesses on scene reported the stabbing and the victim’s arrival at the store seeking help. San Diego Sheriff Lt. Michalke told the outlet the man suffered life-threatening injuries and that deputies transported him to the hospital under Code 3 conditions, using emergency lights and sirens to clear the way. A sheriff’s deputy provided the Code 3 escort for the ambulance, according to the same account.
The sheriff’s department call log recorded the incident as an assist-other-agency call logged at 8:47 p.m. Friday, September 18. That timing lines up with the broader emergency response Village News described, which included sheriff’s units seen in the 6000 block of West Lilac Road and the pickup truck itself located at 5500 Mission Road.
A Wide Response Across Bonsall's Back Roads
The two locations are in Bonsall, where two-lane country roads can complicate emergency response during severe injuries.
Bonsall itself is an unincorporated, low-density community spanning about 32.8 square miles, marked by equestrian properties, agriculture and limited commercial infrastructure, per the County of San Diego. That sparse commercial footprint helps explain why a roadside gas station became the destination for a man fighting for his life.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s Fallbrook Substation covers a 137-square-mile rural command area including Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow and De Luz, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. Pre-hospital emergency medical care in the community is handled separately by the North County Fire Protection District, which staffs five full-time stations across Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow, including Station 5 on Olive Hill Road in Bonsall.
Why Palomar Medical Center and Why It Mattered
The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center, the only Level II Trauma Center serving North San Diego County, which operates a 24-hour emergency department with 44 specialized trauma rooms, per Wikipedia. Code 3 conditions permit law enforcement and medical vehicles to run red lights and sirens, overriding normal traffic laws, when a patient’s condition is considered life-threatening — the same designation Lt. Michalke applied to this case.
Officers collected evidence from the crime scene on September 18, though the exact physical circumstances of the altercation on West Lilac Road have not been detailed publicly. The alleged assailant is known to investigators, Village News reported, but it remains unclear whether an arrest warrant or criminal complaint has been filed. Under California Penal Code Section 245(a)(1), assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm — including a knife — is a wobbler offense that can bring two, three or four years in state prison, or up to a year in county jail and fines as high as $10,000, according to FindLaw.
In August, a man allegedly attacked his former roommate with a chainsaw near Rice Canyon Road in Fallbrook before fleeing, as Hoodline previously reported.
