The Bruins turned Fenway Park into a batting-practice setting Saturday, with Morgan Geekie hitting a home run over the Green Monster and Tanner Jeannot clearing the wall twice before the players watched the Red Sox game. Geekie later delivered the ceremonial first pitch, according to the Associated Press.
Geekie played competitive baseball in Manitoba before concentrating on hockey. In 2013, he missed a Western Hockey League training camp to play for Team Manitoba at the Canadian Bantam Boys Baseball Nationals, according to a Boston Bruins profile.
Nine Bruins made the trip, including Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, Jeremy Swayman and Fraser Minten, the Boston Herald reported. Zadorov was among the players who took part in the baseball activities during the week of the team's captain's practices.
The Fenway visit also led Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy to suggest a hockey role for pitcher Payton Tolle, the Herald reported. Tracy pointed to Tolle's 6-foot-6, 250-pound frame; Tolle bats and throws left-handed, was drafted by Boston in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of TCU, and made his major league debut against Pittsburgh on Aug. 29, 2025, according to Baseball-Reference.
The Herald also reported that Tracy considered Caleb Durbin a potentially gritty hockey fit but questioned whether the infielder's 5-foot-6 height would translate to the sport. Boston is scheduled to open training camp Friday and begin its regular season against the New York Rangers at TD Garden on Sept. 29, according to the Herald.
Fenway's hockey history
Fenway Park's connection to hockey predates the Bruins' batting-practice visit. According to NCAA.com, the ballpark began hosting outdoor hockey in 2010 as part of the Frozen Fenway series and has since hosted more than 20 college games involving men's and women's teams. The 2023 Frozen Fenway series included two Division I men's games and two women's games after the NHL's 2023 Winter Classic between the Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, NCAA.com reported.
