Smoke was pouring from a first-floor unit at a four-story Buckhead apartment building Wednesday afternoon when Atlanta firefighters arrived to find residents trapped and two dogs inside. Crews pulled two people from a third-floor apartment and helped several other residents to safety, but one dog did not survive, while a second was rescued alive.
Atlanta Fire Rescue Department crews responded to the 3200 block of Lenox Road NE at roughly 12:43 p.m. Wednesday and found a working fire inside a first-floor unit at what has been identified as The Strand at Lenox complex, according to 11Alive. Firefighters searched the building, extinguished the flames, and removed two residents from a third-floor unit, according to the department. As reported by WSB-TV, Grady EMS evaluated three people at the scene, though it was not immediately clear whether anyone was taken to a hospital. Firefighters ultimately rescued a second dog alive from inside the building.
A Complex With a Troubled Fire History
This is not the first time flames have torn through the property at 3200 Lenox Road NE.
A major fire tore through the same address on November 1, 2023, damaging eight units and displacing at least 49 residents.
Code troubles at the address didn't end there.
What Georgia Law Requires of Landlords
Under Georgia Code § 25-2-40, residential landlords are legally required to install and maintain functioning smoke detectors near sleeping areas. Georgia appellate decisions have further reinforced that property owners remain liable under O.C.G.A. § 44-7-14 for tenant injuries stemming from a failure to maintain fire safety systems, according to case law compiled by FindLaw. Georgia courts have ruled that landlords cannot delegate those statutory fire safety maintenance duties to avoid premises liability.
The block has also drawn attention from Atlanta police. The department reported an officer-involved shooting at 3047 Lenox Road NE, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Citywide Inspection and Fleet Gaps Add Context
Wednesday's fire also lands amid broader questions about how well Atlanta tracks fire risk across its multi-family housing stock. An April 2026 municipal performance audit found that the city lacked a complete and reliable site inventory for fire inspections, according to the City of Atlanta Auditor's Office.
Separately, Atlanta Fire Rescue is the city's fire department, according to the City of Atlanta.
Wednesday's blaze adds to the fire calls Atlanta Fire Rescue has handled this year. The fire occurred in a multi-story apartment complex.
