A four-vehicle crash on Interstate 393 West near Exit 2 in Concord left two drivers injured, one of them seriously, during Wednesday morning's commute. State troopers arrived to find a male driver trapped and seriously hurt inside his vehicle, and a passerby stepped in to help free him.
Trooper Found Victims Pinned Inside Wrecked Cars
According to NBC Boston, the crash happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, and New Hampshire State Police responded to the reported four-vehicle wreck. A state trooper driving on the interstate came upon the collision around 8:30 a.m. and radioed dispatch; about two minutes later, the trooper reported that victims were pinned and unconscious inside their vehicles, according to Concord Patch, prompting Concord Fire Alarm to send additional rescue personnel to the scene.
Troopers located the seriously injured male driver trapped inside his vehicle and, with help from a Good Samaritan, managed to free him, the outlet's report notes. Additional first responders then provided medical treatment to that driver and to another injured motorist.
Highway Shut Down for Ninety Minutes During Rush Hour
I-393 westbound was closed following the crash, backing up traffic onto U.S. Route 4 in the Chichester area, as reported by The Pulse of NH. Concord Patch reported that firefighters reopened the highway's high-speed lane just before 9 a.m. and cleared the scene at 9:30 a.m. The Merrimack County Sheriff's Office, Concord Fire Department, and New Hampshire Department of Transportation all assisted state police at the scene.
Three people were taken to local hospitals; Concord Patch reported that an elderly man, a woman, and an infant were taken to the hospital.
Investigators Say Drivers Are Cooperating
New Hampshire State Police are investigating the four-vehicle crash in Concord.
Exit 2 on I-393 has seen serious multi-vehicle collisions before. In June 2021, Concord Fire Department personnel responded to a similar three-vehicle crash near the same exit, extracting a trapped driver and transporting three injured people to Concord Hospital, according to a report from the City of Concord.
Interstate 393 is a 4.6-mile auxiliary interstate co-signed with U.S. Routes 4 and 202, built to bypass commercial traffic on Route 9 in eastern Concord and to connect I-93 with Route 106 and eastern Merrimack County, according to background compiled on Wikipedia.
