Minneapolis is getting one relatively manageable weather day Thursday before a wetter, rougher Friday takes over. The morning starts cloudy and humid, around 57 degrees, with patchy fog through about 9 a.m.; skies should brighten at times later, and afternoon temperatures climb to around 76.
Heavy Rain Arrives Friday
The bigger concern is Friday, when rain is expected to spread across the Twin Cities by morning and continue into afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The National Weather Service says 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in parts of the region, with amounts topping 2 to 4 inches more likely from the southern metro toward the Minnesota-Iowa border.
Friday’s high should reach only about 65 before temperatures slide toward 61 in the afternoon. East winds of 5 to 15 mph could gust to 30 mph, making for a sloppy commute and a poor setup for outdoor plans.
Thunderstorms Could Raise Flooding Concerns
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Friday night, with lows near 58 and additional heavy rainfall possible. Repeated rounds of rain could cause flooding, with the greatest concern Friday night into early Saturday, while no watches or warnings are posted for Minneapolis at this time.
Thursday night stays mostly cloudy with a low near 58 and a 30% chance of showers after 4 a.m. That late-night shower chance is a small preview of the much wetter pattern expected to settle in Friday.
Weekend Weather Improves Slowly
Saturday should begin with likely showers before 1 p.m., then turn quieter under mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 70. Sunday looks like the weekend’s better bet: partly sunny, breezy from the northeast and near 69.
Clouds and occasional shower chances linger into Monday, when the high is expected to reach only 63. Tuesday stays mostly cloudy near 66, while Wednesday may bring a sunnier rebound to around 72.
