A Pattern Candler Park Has Seen Before
The Candler Park Lake Claire Neighbors organization's most recent monthly tally, covering August 2026, counted 11 total reported crimes in the neighborhood, according to a Candler Park safety report. That report noted the figure was a decrease from July, though it did not specify whether those 11 incidents were vehicle break-ins or another category of crime. The same report pointed residents toward CPLC Patrol, a community resource that provides additional police patrols in APD vehicles, and reminded neighbors to call or text 911 when they need police to arrive or when criminal activity is happening in real time.
Candler Park sits within Atlanta's Zone 6, an east-side policing area that also includes Boulevard Heights and Cabbagetown, according to a Patch report on a separate incident. That same zone saw a 36 percent jump in larcenies from autos during a 28-day stretch from Dec. 14 to Jan. 11, per Atlanta police crime statistics cited in that report — a reminder that vehicle break-ins have long been a recurring headache east of downtown.
Other Neighborhoods Have Faced Bigger Numbers
Candler Park's current case is far from the largest break-in cluster Atlanta has dealt with recently. Just a few miles away in Kirkwood, police confirmed they were investigating a series of car break-ins after initially counting approximately 20 vehicles hit, according to Decaturish, though officials cautioned that number could change as the investigation continued. Investigators there were reviewing surveillance footage, and Decaturish noted that similar break-ins had been reported in recent months in other Atlanta neighborhoods, including Grant Park and Old Fourth Ward.
Fox 5 Atlanta reported a similar Kirkwood incident in which officers responding to 190 Kirkwood Road NE discovered 20 vehicles with their windows smashed, with police saying suspects hit the vehicles early on a Sunday morning. Near Grant Park, neighbors reported more than 100 car break-ins in a single overnight stretch from Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to Atlanta News First, with one resident saying 11 vehicles on her Waldo Street block alone — including hers and her husband's — were broken into. That same report cited Atlanta police data showing car break-ins fell 9 percent from 2022 to 2023, and that the latest citywide numbers showed thefts from motor vehicles down 14 percent compared with the previous year.
An even larger incident predates the current wave: 76 cars were broken into in a single night at The Edge apartment complex near the Atlanta BeltLine, Patch reported, after which police said investigators were searching for suspects and had increased patrols in the area. Candler Park's Lake Claire Neighbors group has separately warned that one in four Atlantans will experience a car break-in within the next five years, a statistic the organization cites in urging residents to take basic precautions with their vehicles.
