Two drivers were killed and two other people, including a 12-year-old girl, were injured Sunday evening after a Volkswagen crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a Subaru on Navarre Road Southwest in Canton. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, and the crash remains under investigation.
According to Fox 8, the crash happened at about 8:24 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, on the 2200 block of Navarre Road Southwest, per Canton police. A 2024 Volkswagen Atlas was heading westbound when it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2026 Subaru Outback traveling eastbound, according to the report given to Fox 8.
The impact flipped the Volkswagen onto its roof and threw its driver from the vehicle, the station reported. That driver, identified as Bennie L. Woodson of Massillon, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. Fox 8 listed his age as 42, while a separate report from Yahoo News put his age at 43; the discrepancy has not been resolved.
Subaru Driver, Passengers Caught in the Collision
The Subaru's driver, Kiersten E. Narad, 34, of Midland, Pennsylvania, was also pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Cleveland.com. Three people were riding in the Subaru at the time of the crash. Narad's two passengers survived and were rushed to Aultman Hospital.
The station's report identifies the two hospitalized passengers as a 12-year-old girl and a 36-year-old man. Officials described their injuries as serious but not life-threatening, per the same account. Both remained hospitalized as police continued piecing together how the head-on collision unfolded.
Investigation Continues Into Crash Cause
As of Tuesday, police were still investigating what caused the Volkswagen to cross the center line, according to Cleveland.com. No further details on the cause of the crash have been released. The stretch of Navarre Road Southwest where the collision occurred remains the focus of that ongoing inquiry.
