A Carlsbad man pleaded guilty this week to charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in a crash that killed a 23-year-old mother of two just days before her 24th birthday. Jose Manuel Zambrano Cruz entered his plea on Wednesday, more than two years after his Volkswagen Jetta struck and killed Karla Estefania Guillen as she stepped out of her parked car on Las Palmas Drive.
Guillen had just finished a late-night shift at a fast-food restaurant and had parked her vehicle on Las Palmas Drive shortly after 12:30 a.m. on September 10, 2024, according to El Latino. She was exiting her car when Zambrano Cruz's Jetta slammed into her and three other parked vehicles along the street, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by NBC 7 San Diego.
Police said Zambrano Cruz fled the crash scene before he was tracked down and arrested in the 6600 block of El Camino Real near Poinsettia Lane, just over a mile away, per the same NBC 7 account. A witness reported seeing his Jetta traveling at a high rate of speed on Las Palmas Drive in the moments before the crash, according to a Facebook post from NBC San Diego — a detail that speaks to the gross negligence element prosecutors must prove in this category of DUI case.
A Young Family Left Reeling
Guillen was a wife to Ronaldo Delgado and mother to two young children, and her death days before her 24th birthday devastated her surviving family, El Latino reported. Her relatives organized community fundraising to cover unexpected expenses in the aftermath, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up on her behalf.
After his arrest, Zambrano Cruz was initially released on $50,000 bond and ordered to wear an electronic GPS ankle monitor while the case moved through the courts, the outlet's report noted. Guillen's mother feared he might flee before trial.
He ultimately pleaded guilty to DUI causing injury, hit-and-run causing death, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to The North County Chronicle.
Up to Nine Years Behind Bars
Zambrano Cruz now faces up to nine years in state prison. Under California Penal Code Section 191.5(a), gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated carries a standard sentence of four, six, or 10 years, according to FindLaw, and requires driving in violation of specified Vehicle Code sections and a death proximately caused by an unlawful act with gross negligence, or by a lawful act performed unlawfully with gross negligence.
The case adds to a troubling pattern of fatal DUI and hit-and-run crashes in Carlsbad. In a separate case, 26-year-old Fernando Saldana pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in connection with a fatal suspected-DUI hit-and-run that killed pedestrian Vanessa Wheyland, a case Hoodline previously covered.
A City Already Fighting a Traffic Safety Crisis
Guillen's death and the more recent Wheyland case both fall within a city that has been grappling with road safety for years. In August 2022, Carlsbad declared a local state of emergency for traffic and bicycle safety after officials reported a 233% spike in collisions since 2019, according to The Coast News.
More recently, the Carlsbad Traffic Safety and Mobility Commission evaluated local age limits for electric mobility devices in September 2025 under new state legislation, part of the city's continuing effort to update ordinances addressing evolving roadway risks.
