A new elevated Mexican restaurant is set to open its doors in Norman on Oct. 3, bringing an acclaimed Oklahoma City chef's culinary style to North Interstate Drive. Fortaleza by Don Arturo, a partnership between restaurateur Oscar Correa and chef Don Arturo Garcia, will take over 1316 N. Interstate Dr., aiming to, in the restaurant's own words, bring Mexico to Oklahoma.
According to The Oklahoman, Correa teamed up with Garcia to launch the new concept, with Garcia bringing the culinary credibility behind the dishes. El Sabor de la Baja is a Tijuana-style seafood restaurant in Oklahoma City that edibleOKC has called a hit and a talk of the 405 dining scene.
A Kitchen Built On Baja Flavor
El Sabor de la Baja made its name serving what edibleOKC describes as authentic “food of TJ,” a nod to Tijuana's coastal seafood traditions, with ingredients sourced daily through a purveyor in Mazatlán rather than the landlocked staples typical of standard Tex-Mex kitchens. The restaurant's growth was fast: after opening on Northwest 10th Street in Oklahoma City, it expanded into an adjacent storefront that had previously housed an Asian restaurant, per the same outlet's reporting.
EdibleOKC credits Gerardo Banuelos with El Sabor de la Baja's menu and describes the restaurant as a talk of the 405 dining scene. The full menu for Fortaleza by Don Arturo has not been detailed.
The new restaurant is moving into a space with roots in Norman's dining scene. The address previously housed Los Compadres Cafe, a Mexican restaurant with a traditional Tex-Mex menu, according to Visit Norman. Fortaleza's arrival marks a shift from that traditional model toward a more elevated dining experience in the same footprint.
Stepping Into A Crowded Corridor
Fortaleza by Don Arturo won't have the North Interstate Drive corridor to itself. The strip already includes Ted's Café Escondido, a major regional Tex-Mex operator located at 700 N. Interstate Dr., per Visit Norman.
Downtown Norman also has Rosa Mezcal on Main Street, described by Giftly as a cocktail bar and casual restaurant with a modern style.
Part of what makes the Interstate Drive location attractive is its visibility. The I-35 corridor through Norman includes shopping and dining and carries traffic. For a new, elevated concept trying to build a following fast, that visibility could prove just as important as the menu itself.
